Short Biography

Usman Sumo Friend Tambunan is Professor of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, Universitas Indonesia since 1997. He earned his Dr. degree in Chemistry from Tohoku University, Japan in 1986 under Prof. Sho Ito supervision with dissertation title of “Synthetic Studies on Polycyclic Terpenoids.(-)-Vitrenal and (±)-Lauren-1-ene”. Afterward, he carried out postdoctoral research at Kansas University, Battelle Memorial Institute, Colombus, Ohio, USA and in Taiwan to study pharmaceutical biotechnology. Since then, he has been a lecturer for Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at Universitas Indonesia. He has been appointed to several positions at Universitas Indonesia, such as Vice Dean I of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (2001-2004) and Chief of Professor Council at Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (2007-2015). Additionally, he also worked as Senior Scientist at Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT), Energy Resources Division (1986-1993). Currently, he also served as the editor of several prestigious journals, such as Asian Journal of Biological Sciences, International Journal of GEOMATE, Open Biochemistry Journal and Biochemistry Insight. Moreover, he has been selected as the Associate member of Institute of Integrative Omics and Applied Biotechnology (IIOAB).

Prof. Tambunan research interests focus on drug and vaccine design using computational method (in silico approach) for avian influenza (H5N1, H1N1, H7N9), Ebola virus, dengue virus, and cervical cancer. His research includes the development of natural products (such as flavonoids and stilbenoids), cyclic peptides, and fragment-based drug design to find better drug candidate to combat these diseases. Moreover, he is also specialized in enzyme stability and bioinorganic chemistry studies of the ligand-enzyme complex as well. His research has been funded by Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education (through Penelitian Unggulan Perguruan Tinggi since 2015, and Hibah Riset Utama BOPTN from 2014-2015) and Universitas Indonesia (through Publikasi Terindeks Internasional Untuk Tugas Akhir Mahasiswa UI since 2016).

For his achievement and work at Universitas Indonesia, he has been rewarded with several prestigious awards, such as Satya Lencana (30 Years of Dedication) in 2010 and 3rd Best Professor at Universitas Indonesia in 2009.
