Chemistry Students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, Win International Awards

UI FMIPA student, Muhammad Al-Haqiqi (Chemistry 2018) won the international award “Outstanding Diplomat” in the Model United Nation (MUN) conference held online by World Peace International 2.0 in Pakistan on July 18-19, 2020.

In the diploma, international relations, and UN conference, the student who is familiarly known as Qiqi acted as a delegate for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea/North Korea (North Korea) at the United Nations General Assembly or more commonly known as the United Nations General Assembly with the agenda topic “Promoting SDG-16: Post-COVID 19”.

As delegates, participants were required to represent a country affected by COVID-19. The country was randomly selected.

“In this UN Session Simulation, I represented a country affected by COVID-19. The country I represented was the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea/North Korea. The countries I represented were randomly assigned to each participant,” Qiqi explained in an interview with the UI Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Public Relations team.

In accordance with the activity agenda, Qiqi in her proposal proposed several norms that could form the basis for North Korea’s policy direction for long-term economic sustainability amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some of these policy directions include: Respond, Restore, Restart (3R Framework) sebagai Financial responses for developing countries to support strategic health, trade flows, food and energy, inflation, and capacity building for medical personnel. Economic assistance to developing countries is needed to ensure the promotion of SDG 16 across all sectors during the pandemic.

Besides that, International Support to Future (INSUF) juga perlu diterapkan untuk Achieving “no one left behind.” In this regard, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea needs to support sustainable development goals by collaborating with NGOs for long-term solutions to the problem of economic inequality post-COVID-19.

As a delegate of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Qiqi believes that the inequality that occurs due to economic disparity has implications for the failure to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals 16 target, so the financial income gap must be addressed immediately.

Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation and/or academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.
