The national level competition involving more than 130 participants carried the theme “Urban Culture: Through the Lens of Townspeople“. From hundreds of participants, the 1st to 3rd place winners and 20 best works will be made into an anthology of works by the relevant committee.

The scheme of the competition can be said to be quite simple. In the first stage, participants collect several files and essay scripts. After the registration period is closed, it is continued by the assessment and judging period. Finally, the committee announces the winner and the best work without a presentation session.

In his interview with the UI FMIPA Public Relations Team, Adnan explained that the ideas he put forward were related to anthropology. urban culture from a negative perspective. On his occasion, he wrote an essay entitled “Simulacra of City Life: The Other Side of the Urban Culture Hustle and Bustle that Accompanies Progress and Brings the Threat of Social Decline”. The idea was inspired by the rampant hoaxes, the effects dunning-kruger, to the confirmation bias that is currently increasingly rooted in urban society, where Adnan believes that this phenomenon actually makes advanced urban society look “primitive”.

“In terms of uniqueness, I feel that what makes my writing different from other participants is the type of approach used. When other participants discuss with a cultural and social analysis approach, I discuss with a philosophical and semiotic approach. Maybe that is one of the unique things about my writing, but of course the jury has the right to judge in more detail about it,” said Adnan.

This competition is not the first experience for Adnan, but he has been active in several competitions. He said that his motivation in every competition is always the same, namely because of his passion in competing, especially writing competitions.

“As for the motivation to join this competition, it is actually because I want to hone my skills, especially in terms of technical and scientific writing. It can be considered “refreshing“Also from lecture materials and broadening horizons outside the department,” he continued.

As a geoscience student who entered the anthropology competition, Adnan admitted that he felt quite challenged during the process of compiling his essay. Especially in the process of searching for references and data that are relevant and valid to the topic raised. In addition, Adnan felt the need to adjust the writing style and discussion flow to the field of science of this competition.

Ending the interview session, Adnan also said that by participating in the competition, he gained many positive benefits, such as honing his skills, adding to his portfolio, expanding his network, and many more.

“Anyway, a message for other FMIPA UI friends, don’t hesitate to try competitions and compete. Winning and losing is a matter for later because in my opinion when we try there are only two possibilities, namely if we don’t win ya lose. But if we No try, how can we win? Let’s promote a positive competitive environment from and for the University of Indonesia through competitions that suit our friends’ interests and talents.” Adnan said giving closing statement-nya.
