Department of Chemistry FMIPA UI Produces and Distributes Hand Sanitizer Free of Charge to the Community

Through a Community Service Program, the Department of Chemistry FMIPA UI, in collaboration with the FMIPA UI Administration Center and the Chemistry Student Association (HMD) FMIPA UI, produced and distributed hand sanitizer free of charge to the general public around the Depok area, West Java.

The distribution was carried out by HMD Chemistry FMIPA UI on Friday (March 20). The targeted locations for the distribution of a total of 408 bottles of 100 ml hand sanitizer included the UI Student Dormitory, Yellow Bus Stops, Boulevard Park, Campus Partner Ojek Station at the Faculty of Engineering, as well as the Dompet Dhuafa Foundation and the Al-Abqo Ziyadah Orphanage and Underprivileged Shelter Foundation.

Dean of FMIPA UI, Dr. Rokhmatuloh, M.Eng., stated that this activity was motivated by the scarcity of hand sanitizer in the market during the current COVID-19 pandemic, even though the available products are quite expensive.

He added that this community service program is also a form of FMIPA UI’s dedication in applying the knowledge of its academic community, accompanied by moral responsibility for that knowledge. This encourages the role of FMIPA UI’s community—both students and researchers—to contribute to helping solve national problems.

“This program is a preventive step we are taking, considering that hand sanitizer is still scarce in the market. Therefore, we encourage the FMIPA UI community to take part in helping society by applying the knowledge they have,” said Dr. Rokhmatuloh, M.Eng.

Chairman of the Chemistry Department, Dr. rer. nat. Budiawan, explained that this community service program is supported by funding from FMIPA UI and FMIPA UI Alumni.

Until now, production and distribution are ongoing according to the available stock or production target of 300 liters. Of that target, only 200 liters have been produced and distributed so far.

He added that the production target aims to expand the distribution reach, especially to hospitals and other healthcare facilities (Fasyankes) around Depok city.

“There is still more (production and distribution) depending on stock availability of 300 liters; so far, we have produced 200 liters. The production and distribution are not only for the general public but also focused on hospitals and community health centers,” he added to the FMIPA UI public relations team.

Hospitals targeted for distribution include Jakarta Islamic Hospital and Bunda Menteng Hospital.

Regarding the materials and formulas used, he assured that the Department of Chemistry FMIPA UI has followed the guidelines standardized by the World Health Organization (WHO), paying attention to health aspects and environmental friendliness.
