Eleven Medical Physics Students of FMIPA UI Receive International Atomic Energy Agency Scholarships for Nuclear Medicine Training Program

A total of eleven students of the Medical Physics Masters Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), University of Indonesia (UI) have successfully received scholarships from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with a total value of 440 million Rupiah. Those selected include Asyifa Khoerunnisa, Fulki Fiarka Djoni, Parinza Ananda, Hany Yuliati, Jenni Natalia Corebima, Hendra Himawan, Rosa Desinta, Abdurrahman Aziz Wicaksono, Aulia Firma, Antonius Fajar Adinegoro, and Rohma Novitasari.

This scholarship is provided in the form of training that will be implemented through the IAEA national project INS6022 entitled “Expansion Radiation Medicine in Indonesia”. This training program lasts for eight months, starting in February to September 2025, and is held at various nuclear medicine centers in Indonesia.

Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., said that this program is in line with the health sector transformation efforts initiated by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. One of the main aspects of this transformation is the development of oncology center infrastructure spread across all provinces, with the aim of improving the quality of health services, especially in the treatment of cancer.

In response to this need, FMIPA UI is committed to supporting the program by producing quality human resources, especially in the field of medical physics. Through education that focuses on developing technical skills and in-depth knowledge, FMIPA UI strives to produce medical physicists who are not only excellent in academics, but also ready to contribute in providing optimal health services for the community.

“We are very aware that the development of nuclear medicine technology requires qualified and competent experts. Therefore, through this program, we are committed to producing human resources, especially medical physicists, who are superior and ready to support optimal health services for the community,” said Prof. Dede.

In line with the Dean, Head of the Medical Physics Study Program, FMIPA UI, Prof. Supriyanto Ardjo Pawiro, M.Si., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of the existence of reliable medical physicists to support public health services.

“One of the human resources needed for this service is an excellent medical physicist,” said Prof. Supriyanto.

After completing this training, continued Prof. Supriyanto, students will be prepared to acquire clinical practice skills competencies, such as calibrating nuclear medicine equipment, calculating internal radiation doses in nuclear medicine patients, ensuring the quality of nuclear medicine equipment, and providing radiation protection and safety services in nuclear medicine.

“This competency will strengthen their contribution in supporting the development of nuclear medicine in Indonesia, which is increasingly important to improve health services. We are sure that this achievement is the beginning of a major contribution that can be given by FMIPA UI in realizing better and more equitable health services throughout Indonesia,” he added.

With this training, it is hoped that students will not only gain deeper knowledge and skills, but can also play a strategic role in improving cancer diagnosis and therapy, as well as supporting the development of the latest medical technology, in order to realize more efficient, accurate, and affordable health services for all Indonesian people.

Meanwhile, Antonius Fajar Adinegoro, one of the students receiving the IAEA scholarship, said that this scholarship provides an extraordinary opportunity for them to hone their skills and knowledge in the field of medical physics, especially in nuclear medicine.

“In addition to gaining knowledge from experts, we also had the opportunity to build networks with various partner hospitals in Indonesia, which allowed us to understand more deeply the implementation of nuclear medicine in health facilities and the challenges faced in its implementation. We hope that the knowledge gained can contribute to improving medical services in Indonesia and ensure that this technology is used appropriately, safely, and responsibly,” said Antonius.

About the Medical Physics Study Program, FMIPA UI

The Master of Medical Physics study program is a development of the Medical Physics interest that has been developed for more than 20 years in the Department of Physics, FMIPA UI. This study program aims to produce Medical Physicists who will work in Health facilities. In addition to facilitating graduates to practice in Health facilities, graduates of the medical physics study program can work in the Health device industry as product specialists in Health device companies, research and development centers, regulators in the Ministry of Health or the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency.

About the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the International Atomic Energy Agency that seeks to promote the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to discourage its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency was established as an autonomous organization on 29 July 1957. Although established independently of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the IAEA Statute, the International Atomic Energy Agency reports to the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council.

The International Atomic Energy Agency serves as an intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology and nuclear power worldwide. The programs of the International Atomic Energy Agency encourage the development of peaceful applications of nuclear energy, science and technology, provide international safeguards against misuse of nuclear technology and nuclear materials, and promote nuclear safety (including radiation protection) and nuclear security standards and their implementation.
