Female Chemistry Student of FMIPA UI Wins 2nd Place in Solo Singing Competition at UI’s 73rd Anniversary Celebration

Amelia Febri Utami, an undergraduate chemistry student from the 2022 cohort at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), won 2nd place in the solo singing category of the 73rd UI anniversary competition. The winners were announced during the main celebration event held on Wednesday (February 22, 2023) at Balairung, UI Campus, Depok.

Amel performed the song *Malaikat Juga Tahu* by Dewi Lestari in the competition. For the production of the audio recording and video clip used as the basis for judging by the panel, she received support in the form of recording facilities, video tapping, and editing from the FMIPA UI team.

The final version of the video was then uploaded to the official Instagram page of FMIPA UI Public Relations as assessment material for the judging panel.

She was deemed to have met the judging criteria set by the panel in this singing competition. The evaluation criteria included vocal tone/timbre, vocal technique (breathing, sound production, articulation, improvisation, pitch accuracy), expression and emotional delivery, as well as overall performance.

Amel shared with the FMIPA UI public relations team that she has had a passion for singing since childhood and has consistently developed her singing skills by taking vocal lessons up until she was in high school. To this day, she continues to practice vocals independently.

“I used to take vocal lessons from elementary school through high school. After that, I started focusing on practicing on my own and performing at several events,” Amel told the FMIPA UI public relations team.

Her golden voice also led her to win 1st place in the Solo Vocal Category at the UI Art War 2022. To this day, Amel remains active in performing at several major events in the capital.

Amel, an undergraduate student in the Chemistry Program at FMIPA UI, has proven that students majoring in science can also excel in non-academic fields. For her, having a passion for science doesn’t mean closing off opportunities in other areas. She considers her love for singing as a way to balance her activities.

The chemistry enthusiast expressed her desire to work as a Research and Development (R\&D) expert in the beauty product industry.

“I chose Chemistry at FMIPA UI because chemistry has been my favorite subject since high school. Besides that, Chemistry at UI offers broad career opportunities, including in the field I’m interested in, which is cosmetics. I hope that someday I can work at a company in that industry,” Amel said.
