Post-disaster recovery efforts are not only about rebuilding the physical environment but also about safeguarding the health of the younger generation. In response, the team from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UI), together with the Universitas Indonesia Alumni Association (ILUNI UI) under the coordination of Dr. Retno Lestari, M.Si., a lecturer from the Department of Biology, went directly to the disaster-affected areas in Kabupaten Agam, Sumatera Barat, to conduct education on Healthy and Clean Living Practices (PHBS) for children.
The disaster that struck Kabupaten Agam on Wednesday night (26/11) involved heavy rainfall that triggered flash floods and landslides, peaking in the early hours of Friday (28/11). The floods carried mud and wooden debris that damaged residential areas, while 93 schools were affected, including 22 early childhood education centers (PAUD), 60 elementary schools, and 15 junior high schools at SD Negeri 05 Kayu Pasak
This PHBS education activity was held on Thursday (12/02) at SD Negeri 05 Kayu Pasak, attended by nearly 50 students of various levels, accompanied by their parents. The volunteer team encouraged the children to learn clean living habits using interactive and fun methods, such as singing the “6 Steps of Handwashing” song, practicing focus with a clapping-count game, demonstrating proper toothbrushing techniques, and introducing engaging children’s fable books. In addition, the children were invited to play sports such as volleyball, soccer, and basketball.
“Children are the hope of the nation’s future. Through this PHBS education, we aim to instill the values of healthy and clean living from an early age, so that they not only recover physically but also grow with enthusiasm, resilience, and hope after going through difficult times,” said Dr. Retno.

In addition to education, the volunteer team also distributed assistance in the form of age-appropriate reading books for elementary students, volleyballs, basketballs, futsal balls, and light snacks to support learning and play activities. The children appeared very enthusiastic when seeing the books and sports equipment brought by the team, even stepping forward confidently to sing the handwashing song together.
The volunteer team’s journey to the location also faced challenges, as access roads were blocked by landslides caused by heavy rains two days earlier. Nevertheless, the team’s determination and the children’s enthusiasm ensured that the activities proceeded smoothly.
“The children here still need education on clean living habits, such as proper handwashing and toothbrushing. In addition, they also need activities to spend their free time, one of which is through play and sports like volleyball,” said the Head of Jorong Kayu Pasak, Mr. Noh Fril Harman.
This activity is part of the series of aid distribution programs by ILUNI UI titled “Delivery of Aid by 100 Musicians Heal Sumatra,” supported by TRING Pegadaian, the Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia for Youth Development and Arts Workers, the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BP BUMN), RANS, Visi, TSpace Media, WAG Artis Swara, and in collaboration with the Agam Regency Health Office.
Through the direct involvement of the FMIPA UI and ILUNI UI teams, it is hoped that the values of clean and healthy living will continue to grow and provide long-term benefits for children and the community in Kabupaten Agam, supporting post-disaster recovery both physically and in terms of health.
