FMIPA UI – BMKG Holds Monitoring and Evaluation Meeting on Achievements of Cooperation in the Field of Education

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) together with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) held a Monitoring and Evaluation (Monev) meeting on the achievements of cooperation in the field of education at the Avenzel Hotel and Convention Cibubur, West Java, Thursday (24/8/2023).

This activity, held at the end of each semester, aims to observe and monitor the progress of lecture activities and academic achievements of BMKG employees currently studying in the Postgraduate program at the Physics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia. The primary assessment parameter for this activity is the achievement of student educational and research activities.

Previously, FMIPA UI and the BMKG Education and Training Center (Pusdiklat) had signed a Cooperation Agreement document regarding the Implementation of Postgraduate Education Programs (S2 and S3) in order to increase the capacity of BMKG’s human resources, in 2022 and 2023. This year is the 4th year that the Monev has been carried out.

Twenty-one BMKG employees participated in this collaborative program, comprising 14 master’s students and seven doctoral students from the 2020-2022 intake. They are being prepared to become qualified graduates to develop the human resource capacity and performance of various units within the BMKG.

This is in line with the BMKG Superior Human Resources program with the target of realizing 500 employees with quality S3/Doctoral qualifications by 2030, as an effort to achieve the national development vision, and superior human resources through an integrated learning system that involves every element in the work unit.

Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at the University of Indonesia (UI), Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., stated that the Faculty and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) have established similar collaborations in previous years. He stated that the BMKG’s program to produce 500 doctors is a mandate that also motivates the Faculty to continuously improve the quality of services in the field of education.

“One of the targeted achievements for FMIPA UI postgraduate graduates is publication, in addition to skill development. Therefore, we are committed to continuously improving the quality of learning and research,” said the Dean.
“I hope that the students and their supervisors will actively engage in discussions to jointly identify and explore opportunities for collaborative research and scientific publication,” he added.

Echoing the Dean, the Head of the Physics Department of FMIPA UI, Dr. Djati Handoko, said, “We from the Physics Department are also very grateful for the trust from BMKG to guide the employees in their study assignments through this collaboration. Hopefully, this collaboration will run well in the future, and we certainly want to help BMKG produce competent human resources so that BMKG information will not only become a regional but also a global reference.”

Head of the BMKG Education and Training Center Dr. Nelly Florida Riama, S.Si, M.Si., expressed her appreciation and gratitude to the leadership team and teaching team as well as the student mentoring team of FMIPA UI who have assisted in the implementation of this collaborative program.

Dr. Nelly also explained that the Training Center, as the provider of competency development programs for BMKG employees, is responsible for increasing human resource capacity through education and training. Furthermore, BMKG is currently pursuing a program to produce 500 doctoral-qualified employees by 2030, so she believes it is necessary to collaborate with universities to meet this need.

“BMKG is targeting 500 qualified doctors by 2030. After completing their studies, these new doctors will participate in a competency application program to develop the performance of various units within BMKG. Meanwhile, training is provided to complement and complete competency development,” said Dr. Nelly.

“The BMKG predicts that weather and climate conditions will become increasingly complex in 2030, requiring more capable technological support and human resources. Therefore, the BMKG is moving quickly to improve the quality of its human resources, which is planned to begin in 2023,” he continued.

The evaluation and reporting of student learning achievement from BMKG was delivered by the Head of the Postgraduate Study Program in Physics, Adhi Harmoko Saputro, M.Kom., Ph.D., in front of the BMKG Training Center staff. He reported in detail the achievements of each student. Starting from the percentage of student study achievement (number of credits and semesters), publication achievements to the percentage of research progress.

He also provided input to students regarding the fulfillment of graduate quality standards such as improving journal review skills, sharpening analysis of things found during research, and writing scientific journals.
