FMIPA UI Encourages International Special Classes for Postgraduate Programs, Collaboration with City University of Hong Kong Enters Evaluation Stage

Depok, 10 April 2026 Efforts to internationalize higher education in Indonesia continue to show concrete progress. The Academic Senate of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, FMIPA UI, held a Plenary Meeting of the Faculty Academic Senate (SAF) on March 30, 2026, to discuss the establishment of International Special Classes (KKI) for postgraduate programs in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geography.

The main agenda of the meeting was to discuss academic collaboration with City University of Hong Kong, which is considered one of the potential partners in developing the international program. This initiative is seen as part of a strategy to strengthen the global competitiveness of postgraduate programs within Universitas Indonesia.

Evaluation and refinement of documents

In the plenary meeting, the Academic Senate of FMIPA UI approved the plan to establish the International Special Classes (KKI) for postgraduate programs, with an important note: several academic and administrative documents need to be revised before being submitted to the university level.

These revision notes include adjustments to the curriculum, the international academic collaboration scheme, as well as strengthening quality assurance mechanisms to ensure that the designed program aligns with global higher education standards while also complying with national regulations.

The “approved with notes” decision places the program in a crucial phase, namely the refinement of documents before obtaining final approval at the university level.

Direction of internationalization and academic competitiveness

The plan to establish the International Special Classes reflects a strong commitment from FMIPA UI to expand its global academic network, particularly in the fields of basic sciences and earth sciences. The four study programs involved—Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geography—are considered strategic areas with significant potential for broad cross-border research collaboration.

Through collaboration with overseas universities, this program is expected not only to strengthen the quality of learning but also to open opportunities for double-degree programs, joint supervision, and increased mobility for both students and faculty members.

Implementation challenges

Despite receiving initial support, the implementation of the postgraduate International Special Classes (KKI) still faces several technical challenges, particularly in aligning curricula across institutions and differences in academic systems between countries.

In addition, administrative aspects such as accreditation standards, degree recognition, and the integration of quality assurance systems are important factors that must be ensured before the program can be officially opened to students.

Towards the next stage

Following the outcomes of the plenary meeting, FMIPA UI is now entering the document revision stage before submitting it to the university level for further approval. This phase will determine whether the postgraduate International Special Classes (KKI) program can be implemented soon or will require additional adjustments.

This step also reaffirms the commitment of FMIPA UI to expand its role as a center for science education that is not only nationally but also competitive at the global level.
