Depok, June 11, 2026 – Amid the growing momentum for the development of the semiconductor industry, sensor technology, and advanced materials across Southeast Asia, cross-border collaboration has become a key strategy for accelerating the strengthening of research capacity and human resources in science and technology. In line with Indonesia’s efforts to enhance the competitiveness of national research and innovation, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), welcomed a delegation from the Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), for an official visit and discussion on Wednesday, June 3, at the Dean’s Meeting Room of FMIPA UI.
The meeting marked an initial step toward exploring broader strategic collaboration opportunities in research, education, and human resource development between the two institutions.
The IMEN UKM delegation attending the visit consisted of Prof. Dr. Jumril Yunas, Dr. Dilla Duryha Berhanuddin, and Ts. ChM. Dr. Nur Hidayah Azeman. Upon arriving at FMIPA UI, the delegation was welcomed by the Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dr. Tito Latif Indra, M.Si., along with members of the faculty leadership team.
The meeting also involved a delegation from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia, as part of an effort to expand interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities between the two institutions.
The meeting began with a presentation on FMIPA UI’s profile, highlighting its academic development, research achievements, and the various research groups operating within the faculty. During the session, FMIPA UI introduced a range of research activities conducted by the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Physics, particularly those related to microelectronics, nanoelectronics, functional materials, sensor technology, and advanced materials—areas that closely align with the research focus of the Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN).
The discussion session then involved several research groups from the Department of Physics at FMIPA UI, which presented their areas of expertise and explored potential avenues for collaboration with IMEN UKM. The participating groups included the Quantum, Magnetic, and Ionic Physics Research Group, represented by Dr. Adam Badra Cahaya and Dr. Nur Ika Puji Ayu; the Nanoscience and Functional Materials Research Group, represented by Ferry Anggoro Ardy Nugroho, Ph.D.; and the Physics Research in Intelligent Sensing and Measurement Research Group, represented by Adhi Harmoko, Ph.D. and Dr. Djati Handoko.
The involvement of these diverse research groups is expected to broaden opportunities for more specialized collaborations based on each group’s area of expertise, while also creating pathways for more focused and impactful research partnerships in the future.
Through the discussion session, both institutions exchanged information on their respective research strengths and areas of excellence. Various potential avenues for collaboration were also explored, including joint research projects involving faculty members and researchers, student participation in international research initiatives, and opportunities to develop postgraduate education programs aimed at strengthening human resource capacity in science and technology.
“We see many similarities and strong potential synergies between the expertise of IMEN UKM and the various leading research groups at FMIPA UI,” said Prof. Dr. Tito Latif Indra, M.Si..
He noted that collaboration between research institutions and universities across Southeast Asia is becoming increasingly important for strengthening research capacity and generating innovations that are relevant to the needs of industry and society.
“Therefore, we hope that this meeting will lead to concrete collaboration opportunities, whether in the form of joint research projects, international publications, faculty and student exchanges, joint supervision, as well as the development of laboratories and other academic activities that provide mutual benefits for both institutions,” said Prof. Dr. Tito Latif Indra, M.Si..
In addition to the research aspects, the discussion also covered the potential utilization and sharing of research facilities (facility sharing) between FMIPA UI and IMEN UKM. This scheme is expected to expand researchers’ access to research equipment and infrastructure available at both institutions, thereby supporting more productive and globally competitive collaborations.
Academic mobility opportunities were also a focus of discussion at the meeting. Both parties explored various collaboration opportunities, including undergraduate and graduate student exchange programs, visiting researchers, joint research, internship schemes, and student placements in relevant research groups.
As a follow-up, FMIPA UI and IMEN UKM agreed to continue communication through further discussions, which will be held both online and offline. These follow-up meetings are expected to result in a more concrete work program mapping, including opportunities for researcher exchanges, student deployments for research activities, and the development of long-term academic and research collaborations.
Through this audience, FMIPA UI affirmed its commitment to continuously expanding its international network and building strategic partnerships with leading institutions at the regional and global levels. The collaboration with IMEN UKM is expected to lay the foundation for joint research development, increased academic mobility, and the birth of innovations that can make a real contribution to the advancement of science and technology in Indonesia and Malaysia.
