FMIPA UI Introduces Postgraduate Programs in the Department of Physics Through a Virtual Open House

Saturday (June 4, 2022). The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), held a virtual open house to promote the postgraduate study program in the Department of Physics. The event was held via Zoom and broadcast live on the Physics YouTube channel of the University of Indonesia.

The event is open to the public, especially prospective postgraduate students who have an interest in this field of science.

Present at the event were Dr. Djati Handoko as Head of the Physics Department, and Prof. Dr. Terry Mart Professor of Physics, as well as speakers who were the Heads of Postgraduate Study Programs in the Physics Department of FMIPA UI, namely, Adhi Harmoko Saputro, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D. (Head of the Physics Postgraduate Study Program), Dr. Budhy Kurniawan R., M.Si. (Head of the Materials Science Postgraduate Study Program), and Supriyanto Ardjo Pawiro, M.Si., Ph.D. (Head of the Medical Physics Masters Study Program).

“Thank God, on this bright morning, we can gather to share information about the Physics Department’s postgraduate program. We deliberately held it on a Saturday to provide free and relaxed time, as this event is relatively casual. We hope to be in attendance are prospective postgraduate students and individuals who enjoy conducting research,” said Dr. Djati, beginning his remarks.

The Department of Physics, he continued, has five postgraduate study programs, as follows: A-accredited Master of Physics, Excellent-accredited Master of Materials Science, Good-accredited Master of Medical Physics, Good-accredited Doctor of Physics, and A-accredited Doctor of Materials Science. The department also employs six professors, 33 doctors, three masters, and four research laboratories.

“The competent teaching staff of the Physics Department is expected to be able to become a great team if prospective students register in the Physics Postgraduate Study Program, FMIPA UI,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Terry Mart stated, “The Physics Department has 33 lecturers with doctoral degrees. Compared to other departments, Physics has the highest number of doctorates. From this, we begin to see achievements. The Physics Department is also the department that produces the most scientific publications in international journals. The physics department staff are very active in research and collaborate extensively with international partners.”

The next agenda item was a presentation on the Physics postgraduate program by Adhi Harmoko Saputro, S.Si., M.Kom., Ph.D. In his presentation, he stated that continuing his education in physics in the Physics postgraduate program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) is the right choice, as the Physics Department is under the auspices of one of the best universities in Indonesia.

“The University of Indonesia is noted for its strong international ranking. The Physics Department itself has contributed to numerous publications in the field of physics on behalf of the University of Indonesia Physics Department. The Physics Department has published 2,000 articles, 20 copyright, serta 250 riset dan hibah inovasi,” ujarnya.

He further explained the academic profile of the Physics Master’s and Doctoral programs he leads. Curriculum-wise, he said, the Master’s degree takes two years, while the Doctoral degree takes three years. Both levels offer two study styles: full research and a combined coursework-research program.

“In addition, UI also offers an acceleration program called fast trackFast track “This is a program where both Masters and Doctoral degrees can be completed simultaneously within 4 years,” added the expert in intelligence instruments, vision-based systems, and artificial intelligence from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia.

Furthermore, the Master of Physics program offers five specializations with several relevant elective courses. These specializations are taught by both internal lecturers from the Physics Department and external lecturers who are practitioners in industry. These specializations include Instrumentation Physics, Geophysics, Geothermal Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Nuclear, Particle, and Theoretical Astrophysics. Meanwhile, doctoral courses are relatively limited, as the focus of semesters 3 through 6 is on research.

Another advantage of the Physics Department is its extensive support facilities, including departmental research laboratories, universities, and collaborations. Research support also includes research grants, a library, and scientific seminars. Finally, information technology (IT) facilities include journal access and journal indexing. cloud storage, Microsoft Office, plagiarism check, and 10 GB internet bandwich.

Dr. Budhy Kurniawan, M.Si., discussed Materials Science. He said, “Speaking of Materials Science, we cannot escape the concept of material structure, material synthesis and processing, material characterization and data analysis, and material properties and performance. The courses here are research-based electives. Examples include Magnetic Materials, Ceramics, Polymers and Composites, Corrosion, Nanomaterials, and Computing.”

According to him, the Materials Science postgraduate study program he leads has numerous international collaborations, both in academics and research collaborations. For example, the implementation of the program double degree for doctoral level with RIKEN Japan, summer school dengan HOKKAIDO University, workshop with Malaysian SMEs, as well as research collaborations with MIMOS Malaysia, KAIST Korea, TiT Japan, CHUNGBUK University Korea, and so on.

The event agenda continued with a presentation by Supriyanto Ardjo Pawiro, M.Si., Ph.D.. He explained that the Medical Physics Masters Study Program collaborates with many national and international educational institutions through the program Visiting Professor/LecturerBecause the Master of Medical Physics program plays a crucial role in the healthcare sector, particularly in radiology, it’s no surprise that it has partnered with numerous hospitals across Indonesia, including the University of Indonesia Hospital, Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital, Dharmais Specialist Hospital, and Pasar Minggu Regional General Hospital.

After the three speakers delivered their presentations, the event continued with a question-and-answer session between participants and the speakers, and concluded with a group photo.
