Depok, July 27, 2026 — Lecturer from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), Rika Tri Yunarti, M.Eng., Ph.D., received the KIST Alumni Award in the Distinguished Service category from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), South Korea. The award was presented directly by KIST President Oh Sang-rok as an appreciation for her contributions in expanding Indonesian students’ access to international education and research networks.

To date, she has supported more than 10 Indonesian students in pursuing their studies at KIST School, a master’s and doctoral education program in science and engineering under the University of Science and Technology (UST). Some of these students have since pursued careers as academics, researchers, and industry professionals, while others have continued their education at higher levels.

“I only helped open the way at the beginning; the rest was their own effort to strive and grow. What makes me proud is that some of them who have graduated are now working at research institutions, becoming academics, pursuing careers in industry, and some are continuing their education to higher levels,” said Rika.

The award was presented during the KIST School Homecoming Day, held at the Johnson Auditorium, KIST, Seoul, on Thursday (July 2, 2026). The event was attended by approximately 150 participants from 15 countries.

In addition to supporting talent development, the networks established during her time at KIST School have also grown into research collaborations between her team at FMIPA UI and KIST researchers. These collaborations primarily focus on materials and catalysis, involving joint research, knowledge exchange, and co-authored scientific publications.

“For me, this is a small part of the effort to maintain the good relationship that was initiated by KIST School so that it can continue to provide benefits, not merely end when the study period is completed,” said Rika.

Rika is a lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA UI, with expertise in Inorganic Materials Chemistry. According to her, the international networks established during study can provide broader benefits when they are continuously maintained and developed after alumni return to their home countries.

Rika noted that one of the challenges in building such networks is maintaining sustainable relationships. After completing their studies, the various commitments and activities of each individual can gradually reduce communication and connections among alumni.

“This is where the role of alumni becomes important, as a bridge that maintains relationships, opens opportunities for new collaborations, and helps future students who wish to follow the same path,” she said.

According to her, Indonesian academics also need to play a role as connectors between institutions in Indonesia and international research organizations. In this way, the benefits of global networks do not stop with individuals directly involved but can be extended to other students and researchers in Indonesia.

“If Indonesian academics also take on the role of connectors, the opportunities and knowledge gained can be more easily shared with other students and researchers in Indonesia, ensuring that the benefits do not stop with just one individual,” said Rika.

The KIST Alumni Award in the Distinguished Service category was presented as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of KIST School. The award recognizes alumni who have made contributions to the development of the KIST School network and community.

In addition to Rika Tri Yunarti, M.Eng., Ph.D., the award was also presented to Dr. Hoang Long Du from Monash University, Australia, in the Research Achievement category for his research accomplishments and publications in several international academic journals.

For her, the award serves as a reminder to continue contributing to talent development and international research collaborations.

“I would like to continue helping more Indonesian students who are interested in pursuing their studies at KIST School, while also strengthening existing research collaborations so that they can produce more joint works,” she said.

She also encouraged FMIPA UI students to be confident in taking opportunities to build international academic experiences and networks.

“Do not hesitate to try, even if it feels challenging at first. Build a strong foundation of basic skills, do not be afraid to ask questions, and maintain good relationships with anyone who has guided or supported you,” said Rika.
