Depok, June 4, 2025 – The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), received an academic visit from Leiden University, Netherlands, in order to strengthen international cooperation in the fields of education and research. This event took place at the FMIPA UI Central Administration Building, UI Depok Campus, and became an initial momentum for both institutions to explore various forms of strategic collaboration, including the initiation of programs. Joint Degree at the graduate level, particularly in the field of Biology.
The visit was opened with a welcoming speech by the Manager of Internationalization and Global Ranking of FMIPA UI, Munawar Khalil, Ph.D. The delegation from Leiden University was led by the Dean of the Graduate School of Science, Prof. dr. Erik H. J. Danen, accompanied by the Academic & Education Support Officer from the Office of Leiden University in Indonesia, Afwan Afwandi.
One of the main discussions in this meeting is the plan to launch the program. Joint Degree for the Ph.D. level in the field of Biology. This program is designed to provide cross-border academic experiences for students, with an integrated curriculum and degree recognition from both universities.

More than just sharing a curriculum, the program Joint Degree This offers various strategic benefits, including: expanding students’ access to world-class research facilities, enriching scientific perspectives through multicultural learning, and opening up opportunities for international research collaboration and publication. Students participating in this program will receive academic guidance from two renowned institutions, while also building a global network that is very beneficial for their academic and professional careers in the future.
“We are very interested in this joint program. In the future, we can set up potential students that want to go and study abroad (We are very interested in the program) Joint Degree This is because it represents a very large potential for our students who want to study in the Netherlands,” said the Head of the Biology Department of FMIPA UI, Prof. Anom Bowolaksono, Ph.D.
Both institutions also expressed their commitment to expanding cooperation in the field of research. This cross-border research collaboration is expected to serve as an important foundation in the development of knowledge and global contributions to various scientific issues, such as climate change, biodiversity, and environmental health.
“We want to build more collaboration, starting from research collabs (We hope to build more collaborations, starting with research collaborations),” said Prof. Erik Danen.
FMIPA UI continues to be committed to strengthening international networks through academic and research collaboration. This visit is part of a sustainable internationalization strategy, while also opening wider access for FMIPA UI students and academic community to actively participate in the global scientific community.
