FMIPA UI Scientist Team Wins Second Place in Educational Fair V 2021 National Debate Competition

Three FMIPA UI students from various classes who are members of the Scientist Team, namely Mahesa Oktareza (Mathematics 2017), Benedict David (Chemistry 2018), and Octavia Steevani (Statistics 2018) managed to become runners-up in the 2021 Educational Fair V National Debate Competition organized by the Student Association of the Non-Formal Education Department of Surabaya State University. For information, this competition is the fifth since it was first held in 2017.

Raising a theme regarding The Role of Millennials in Facing Industry Challenges, The Scientist Team must debate various motions given by the jury, where the motions are divided into four sub-themes, namely education, socio-culture, politics, and economics.

The journey of the scientist team to reach the final round was not easy, because they had to go through five rounds or stages, namely the preliminary round which was attended by 20 teams, the round of 16, the round of 8, the semifinal round, and the final round.

Ben, one of the members of the Scientist Team, admitted that the biggest challenge in participating in this debate competition was having to adapt quickly because it had been quite a long time since he had participated in a competition.

“The biggest challenge is probably having to adapt quickly, because it’s been quite a while since I joined a debate competition, the last time was nine months ago when I joined the OIM MIPA debate. After that, I immediately joined this competition with a different mechanism too. So, maybe that’s the challenge,” said Ben.

However, to overcome this challenge, the Scientist Team continues to strengthen chemistry and keep building brainstorming to increase solidarity.

“We are trying our best to strengthen chemistry just go ahead and do it brainstorming juga. Lomba debat itu kan lebih ke brainstorming “That’s it, uniting our opinions to be more compact, because this team has just been formed actually,” said Octa.

Although he felt a little disappointed because he had not managed to bring home first place, Mahesa as the team leader was still grateful for the achievements he had obtained together with his two colleagues and hoped that his team could continue to receive appreciation from various parties, including the faculty.

“Yes, even though there is a sense of disappointment because (only won) second place, but still grateful. Hopefully, our team can continue to receive appreciation, appreciation from the faculty too, and of course we also hope that this achievement can be an inspiration for other (FMIPA UI students) to be able to bring the name of the Faculty of MIPA UI out,” said the man who is also the former chairman of BEM FMIPA UI 2020.
