Launching Innovation of Pop-Up Book on Disaster Mitigation for Children, FMIPA UI Students Receive Funding from the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture

Three FMIPA UI students who are members of the Ceriaa Team (Smart in Facing Natural Disasters) of the Student Creativity Program in Entrepreneurship (PKM-K) across UI faculties, Khairunnisa (Geoscience 2018), Luthfan Julian Nugroho (Geoscience 2018), and Josephine (Chemistry 2019) have succeeded in obtaining PKM-K funding in 2021 organized by the Belmawa Directorate of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. They confirmed this after their proposal together with fellow students from other faculties, namely Teguh Dwi Yulianto (Environmental Engineering, FT UI 2018), and Fashihatul Lisaniyah (Indonesian Literature, FIB UI 2019) was selected from a total of 20,393 PKM-K proposals submitted nationally.

Khairunnisa as the team leader explained, through its proposal, the Ceriaa team initiated an innovation of science and technology (iptek) products as a student business commodity. The iptek product they innovated was a pop-up book as a medium for educating children about natural disaster mitigation such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and floods. To note, a pop-up book is a work of art in the form of a book that can display images in three dimensions.

“In the initial stage, there will be three series of books that they will make, namely the earthquake series, the volcanic eruption series, and the flood series,” said the head of the PKM-K UI team.

Furthermore, he said that the book will also be equipped with interactive audio that can be accessed via barcode. He hopes that the innovative product resulting from his team’s ideas will soon be copyrighted, so that it can immediately enter the next stage, namely production and distribution to Indonesian children. The team plans to start production of the three book series at the end of July 2021.

Regarding content and ideas, team member Luthfan who acts as the person in charge of design and content explained that the idea for designing these three books was born from the background of Indonesia which is a disaster-prone country because it is located at the meeting point of three plates: Eurasia, Australia, and Asia-Pacific, so lessons on natural disaster mitigation need to be introduced to children from an early age with the most attractive visuals possible. Furthermore, Luthfan also explained the advantages of the pop-up books that their team created.

“So the book that our team made has several advantages, including education and the language used is very easy for children to understand, then this book is also made of environmentally friendly materials, and there are interesting games for children at the end of the book, such as snakes and ladders. Another advantage, the price we offer is also very affordable,” said Luthfan.

Josephine, one of the team members, admitted that there were challenges they faced in making this book, including the distance between the members’ homes and the other activities that had to be completed.

“The challenge is the distance between our respective homes, imagine, one is in Bogor, one is in Bekasi, wow, it’s really far. Most of the time we end up looking for alternatives if we have to meet at UI. In addition, we also have to complete other tasks, such as college assignments, and homework too. But because we have the same motivation, in the end it can be overcome,” said Josephine with a smile.

Acting Dean of FMIPA UI Dr. Rokhmatuloh, M.Eng. appreciated the achievements of the Ceriaa team. He hopes that through this PKM-K activity, students can continue to develop their understanding and skills in pioneering profit-oriented entrepreneurship. Even so, he reminded students to prioritize the uniqueness, benefits and quality of products and intellectual content rather than profit, because according to him students are the main driving force in pioneering entrepreneurship while other parties are only supporters.

“Of course we really appreciate it, because we want students both at FMIPA UI and other faculties to have a spirit of… enterpreneur which is able to become the driving force of the economy, meaning profit-oriented. but don’t just count the profit, the benefits and quality of the product must also reflect their intellectual content,” said the Acting Dean of FMIPA UI at the UI Campus, Depok.

The Student Creativity Program (PKM) is a form of implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education launched by the Directorate General of Higher Education in 2021 under the management of the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs (Belmawa) as an effort to foster, accommodate, and realize students’ creative and innovative ideas.

The topic of the Student Creativity Program (PKM) is not limited, it is prioritized on current topics and/or the main topics of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In general, PKM is grouped into 3 (three), namely PKM 5 Fields (PKM-R, PKM-K, PKM-PM, PKM-PI and PKM-KC), PKM-Constructive Futuristic Ideas (PKM-GFK), and PKM-AI & PKM-GT.

PKM generally aims to prepare human resources that are oriented towards the future and are forged with the transformation of Higher Education so that they become superior, competitive, adaptive, flexible, productive, competitive graduates with Pancasila character, and guide students to become individuals who know and obey the rules, are creative and innovative, and are objectively cooperative in building intellectual diversity.
