FMIPA UI Researchers Receive International Research Funding in Medical Physics

Lukmanda Evan Lubis, M.Sc., a research lecturer from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), University of Indonesia (UI) demonstrated his competence by being selected as one of the recipients of research funding in the field of medical physics worth € 32,000 or equivalent to 500 (five hundred) million rupiah from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the world’s atomic agency headquartered in Vienna, Austria.

This was officially announced by the IAEA through a letter from the Department of Nuclear Sciences & Applications, IAEA, on September 9, 2021. The research team from the Department of Physics, FMIPA UI, which successfully obtained the funding consisted of four people, namely, Lukmanda Evan Lubis, Professor of FMIPA UI Prof. Dr. Djarwani S. Soejoko, and two medical physicists who are alumni of the Master of Physics FMIPA UI, namely Indah Lestariningsih, M.Sc. (working at Leuwiliang Hospital, Bogor, West Java) and M. Roslan Abdul Gani, M.Sc. (working at Dharmais Cancer Hospital, Jakarta).

Evan, as he is often called, acts as Chief Scoentific Investigator (CSI) in his research team for this project. To the FMIPA UI public relations team, Evan conveyed that his research project proposal was entitled Establishing Guidelines and Recommendations for Solid State Dosimetry in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology.

He and his team will run this program together with medical physicists from hospitals collaborating with FMIPA UI in a series of joint research. This research will run for five years and will begin funding in 2022. Funded research activities will focus on updating international protocols on radiation dosimetry in diagnostic and interventional radiology applications.

In its preparation, I had many discussions and consultations with team members, including Prof. Djarwani who in 2015-2018 had experience as a CSI in other CRP research. The acceptance of our proposal means that the idea we put forward is considered relevant to the international need for the concept of radiation dosimetry in the field of diagnostic and interventional radiology,” said the doctoral student of physics FMIPA UI to the FMIPA UI public relations team.

Through the funding he has received, the medical physicist at the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI) hopes that his research can develop into a theoretical basis and innovation that is expected to contribute to radiation safety for patients, radiation workers, and the community.

Head of the Master of Medical Physics study program (Kaprodi), Dr. Supriyanto Ardjo Pawiro expressed his gratitude for the achievements of lecturers under the auspices of his study program. According to him, the quality and quantity of research and scientific publications are important indicators that can represent the quality of a university.

In fact, said Dr. Supriyanto, it is an important component in the ranking and accreditation of higher education institutions, so that through the research funding obtained, he hopes that the new study program at FMIPA UI that he leads will be able to contribute important points to the ranking of FMIPA UI in the international arena.

“We at the medical physics study program are certainly grateful for the funding, through this research funding, the medical physics study program is indeed still very new at FMIPA UI, but we are trying to participate in promoting FMIPA UI’s reputation at the international level by making breakthroughs and quality scientific works.”

In line with the Head of the Medical Physics Masters Study Program, Dr. Rokhmatuloh, M.Eng. as the Acting Dean of FMIPA UI emphasized that the obligation of a lecturer is not only to teach but also to be active in conducting research, in order to accelerate the quality and quantity of campus scientific publications.

“Being a lecturer does not mean that the focus is only on teaching, but also must be active in research activities to build the reputation of the faculty and university. This is important, because building a reputation requires emphasizing innovation that is born from research activities,” said Dr. Rokhmatuloh.

Moreover, said Dr. Rokhmatuloh, FMIPA UI provides the greatest support for lecturers in conducting research activities by providing facilities and internal grant funds, one of which is funding for community service programs. On the other hand, he also encourages researchers to obtain external research funds as an effort to accelerate this.

“The main asset of lecturers or researchers is creative and innovative ideas, therefore, we at FMIPA UI provide various facilities and funding to support lecturers in realizing their innovations through research activities, one of which is funding for community service programs, we also encourage lecturers or researchers at FMIPA UI to actively seek external funding support. “he added.

With the collective efforts of its academicians in boosting the quality of scientific publications, FMIPA UI in 2021 succeeded in occupying the world ranking according to the QS World University Rankings at positions 151-200 in the Geography category and positions 551-600 in the Astronomy category. Therefore, he invited all FMIPA UI researchers to continue to be enthusiastic in conducting research activities and producing quality scientific publications.

“FMIPA UI continues to strive to develop collaboration with international institutions as a strategy to improve the reputation and recognition of international partners. FMIPA UI’s reputation has been recognized worldwide as released by QS WUR in 2021. For this reason, the academic community must be more enthusiastic in improving the quality and quantity of their scientific works,” said Dr. Rokhmatuloh in closing.
