FMIPA UI Students Explore the World of Meteorology and Climatology at BBMKG Region II Ciputat

To support and complement the knowledge gained in the classroom, 21 undergraduate students of Geology and Geophysics from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Indonesia (UI), conducted a visit to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Center (BBMKG) Region II Ciputat on 12 November 2025. Accompanied by two lecturers and one assistant, the visit provided valuable hands-on experience in weather and climate observation, as well as hydrometeorological disaster mitigation.

This visit served as an important moment to connect the theories learned in class with real-world field practice. Mr. Urwatul Wusqa, M.T., a lecturer at FMIPA UI, stated, “This visit is a golden opportunity for students to link classroom theories with field practice, while also understanding the role of meteorology in disaster mitigation.”

On the other hand, BBMKG Region II Ciputat warmly welcomed the students’ visit. Mr. Fitri Afiadi, S.T., M.T., Head of the Cooperation Team at BBMKG Region II Ciputat, explained the history and role of BBMKG in weather and climate observation, as well as hydrometeorological disaster mitigation. He added, “We are pleased to welcome FMIPA UI students. We hope their experience at BBMKG provides real insight into weather and climate observation and disaster mitigation.”

During the visit, students were introduced to the operational systems of weather and climate observation, ranging from data collection to instrument calibration. They also learned about the role of atmospheric data in hydrometeorological disaster mitigation and the use of the Early Warning System (EWS) in BBMKG’s analysis room. The introduction to various meteorological instruments for weather observation further enriched their practical insights—knowledge that cannot be gained solely from classroom learning.

This activity is expected not only to enhance students’ abilities in observation, analysis, and interpretation, but also to broaden their understanding of the role of geoscience in disaster risk reduction. “Field experiences like this enrich students’ perspectives, making them better prepared to face real challenges in the geosciences,” said one of the accompanying lecturers.

In addition to Mr. Urwatul Wusqa and Mr. Fitri Afiadi, the visit was also attended by Ms. Siti Fatimah, M.Sc. from FMIPA UI, as well as Ms. Kristin (Meteorology Division) and Ms. Elvina (Climatology Division) from BBMKG Region II Ciputat.
