Hal ini menimbulkan dampak kerusakan luar biasa pada kehidupan laut. Selain mengotori lautan, sampah juga termakan dan meracuni hewan-hewan laut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Misalnya saja sampah plastik. Plastik adalah polimer organik sintetis. Karakter plastik yang ringan, kuat dan tahan lama membuat plastik banyak digunakan untuk pembuatan berbagai macam produk, terutama produk kemasan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kajian Universitas Georgia yang dirilis tahun 2016 menemukan lautan di Indonesia merupakan perairan kedua di dunia yang menyimpan sampah plastik terbanyak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"249\" src=\"https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-1-4-1024x332-1-768x249-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-1-4-1024x332-1-768x249-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-1-4-1024x332-1-768x249-1-300x97.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-1-4-1024x332-1-768x249-1-18x6.jpg 18w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-1-4-1024x332-1-768x249-1-600x195.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-909685\">Puing-puing plastik di lautan terbuka<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pada seminar \u201cOne Day Seminar on Marine Tropical Diversity and Sustainability\u201d dalam Winter School Program 2018, Kamis (25\/1) di Ged B 101 FMIPA UI, Dr. rer. nat. Mufti Petala Patria, M.Sc., ahli kelautan Departemen Biologi FMIPA UI dalam presentasinya menjelaskan lebih dari 8 juta ton sampah plastik dibuang ke laut tiap tahunnya, sekitar 80% berasal dari aktivitas yang dilakukan di darat yakni Industri, saluran pembuangan, limbah yang tidak diproses dan pariwisata. Sedangkan 20% nya berasal dari kegiatan yang dilakukan di laut yakni perikanan, Transportasi laut, dan industri lepas pantai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dalam pemaparannya tersebut juga dijelaskan bahwa seiring dengan jumlah sampah yang terus membengkak di laut Indonesia bahkan di seluruh dunia, maka semakin terancam pula kehidupan hewan laut tersebut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sebagai contohnya adalah penyu yang kerap kali tersangkut kumpulan sampah bahkan memakan sampah plastik dan mikroplastik karena menganggap sampah tersebut adalah makanan, padahal penyu merupakan salah satu hewan laut yang paling dilindungi, tak hanya terjadi pada penyu, hal inipun terjadi pada burung laut dan singa laut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-3-1-1024x312-1-768x234-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-3-1-1024x312-1-768x234-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-3-1-1024x312-1-768x234-1-300x91.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-3-1-1024x312-1-768x234-1-18x5.jpg 18w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-3-1-1024x312-1-768x234-1-600x183.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bahaya sampah yang mengandung zat-zat kimiawi pada hewan diantaranya adalah menimbulkan luka fisik di saluran usus, translokasi ke jaringan atau organ lain, penurunan berat badan yang signifikan, pengurangan aktivitas makan yang signifikan, dan cacat perkembangan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lalu, apa yang bisa kita lakukan?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. rer. nat. Mufti Petala Patria, M.Sc menuturkan bahwa permasalah ini bukan hanya menjadi tanggung jawab pemerintah ataupun institusi terkait, tapi masyarakat juga perlu berperan aktif dan turut berkontribusi. Misalnya saja berperilaku bijak dalam menggunakan produk berbahan dasar plastik bahkan sebisa mungkin menghindari penggunaan barang-barang yang berpotensi menjadi sampah, bukan hanya plastik, sehingga mengurangi produksi sampah plastik ataupun sejenisnya demi terciptanya lingkungan yang bersih dan sehat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jika permasalahan sampah plastik ini dibiarkan, menurut Dr. rer. nat. Mufti Petala Patria, M.Sc., akan berdampak pada sosial dan ekonomi masyarakat Indonesia, terutama yang tinggal di wilayah pesisir dan pulau-pulau kecil karena  mengakibatkan penurunan pendapatan negara dari sektor kelautan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>lebih lanjut, Dr. rer. nat. Mufti Petala Patria, M.Sc., menjelaskan bahwa upaya pengelolaan sampah menjadi produk yang bermanfaat juga sangat penting untuk ditingkatkan dengan didukung oleh teknologi yang berkembang saat ini, misalnya saja mengkonversikan sampah menjadi energi, selain itu kemasan<em>bio-plastic<\/em>berbahan dasar singkong maupun tanaman lainnya juga berpotensi dikembangkan.
