Siwabessy, FMIPA UI, Depok. Di bawah bimbingan Prof. Dr. Yuni Krisyuningsih Krisnandi, S.Si., M.Sc. dan Ko-Promotor Iman Abdullah, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., Arnia menghadirkan riset inovatif yang menawarkan solusi atas dua persoalan besar dunia saat ini: krisis energi dan kerusakan lingkungan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dalam penelitiannya, Arnia mencari cara memanfaatkan limbah kayu agar bisa diubah menjadi bahan kimia bernilai tinggi. Selama ini, dunia masih sangat bergantung pada bahan bakar fosil yang jumlahnya terus menipis dan berdampak buruk pada lingkungan. Padahal, Indonesia memiliki sumber daya biomassa yang melimpah, termasuk limbah kayu yang belum dimanfaatkan secara maksimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salah satu komponen utama dalam kayu adalah lignin. Zat ini selama bertahun-tahun cenderung dianggap limbah dalam industri pengolahan kayu. Padahal, lignin menyimpan potensi besar untuk diolah menjadi senyawa penting seperti fenol dan vanilin. Fenol banyak digunakan sebagai bahan baku plastik, perekat, hingga berbagai produk industri. Sementara vanilin dikenal luas sebagai bahan perisa yang paling banyak digunakan di dunia dan juga bahan dasar pembuatan material ramah lingkungan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-427-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-427-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-427-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-427-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-427-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-427-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-427-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-427.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arnia menggunakan lignin dari kayu mahoni, yang banyak tersedia di Indonesia dan sering menjadi sisa produksi industri kayu. \u201cSaya melihat limbah kayu, khususnya mahoni, sebagai peluang. Daripada terbuang atau hanya dibakar, lebih baik kita ubah menjadi produk yang punya nilai ekonomi tinggi,\u201d ujar Arnia dalam pemaparannya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Untuk mengubah lignin menjadi senyawa yang lebih sederhana dan bermanfaat, Arnia mengembangkan katalis atau zat pemercepat reaksi berbahan dasar nikel (Ni) dan tembaga (Cu). Katalis tersebut dibuat menggunakan material berpori khusus sehingga proses pemecahan lignin bisa berlangsung lebih efektif. Ia juga membandingkan beberapa jenis katalis untuk melihat mana yang paling optimal dalam menghasilkan fenol dan vanilin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa katalis berbasis nikel bekerja lebih efektif dibandingkan tembaga dalam memecah lignin. Sementara itu, kombinasi logam pada material tertentu mampu meningkatkan hasil produksi fenol secara signifikan. \u201cKami menemukan bahwa struktur dan sifat katalis sangat menentukan hasil akhirnya. Dengan desain yang tepat, prosesnya bisa lebih efisien dan menghasilkan produk yang lebih banyak,\u201d jelasnya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Menurut Arnia, tantangan terbesar dalam pengolahan lignin selama ini adalah rendahnya hasil produk dan ketahanan katalis pada suhu tinggi. Penelitiannya mencoba menjawab persoalan tersebut dengan merancang sistem katalis yang lebih stabil dan selektif. Ia juga menguji reaksi menggunakan senyawa model untuk memahami bagaimana proses pemecahan lignin terjadi secara lebih detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-428-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-428-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-428-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-428-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-428-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-428-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-428-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/chem.ui.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sci-428.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Riset ini dinilai memiliki kebaruan karena menggabungkan penggunaan lignin asli dari biomassa dengan senyawa model serta membandingkan dua sistem katalis berbeda dalam satu pendekatan yang utuh. Dengan cara itu, hubungan antara desain katalis dan hasil reaksi bisa dipahami lebih jelas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arnia berharap temuannya dapat mendorong pemanfaatan biomassa Indonesia secara lebih serius. \u201cIndonesia kaya akan sumber daya alam. Jika diolah dengan teknologi yang tepat, limbah pun bisa menjadi sumber bahan baku industri yang lebih ramah lingkungan dan berkelanjutan,\u201d tuturnya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Melalui disertasi ini, Arnia tidak hanya meraih gelar doktor dari FMIPA UI, tetapi juga membuka peluang baru bagi pengembangan industri kimia berbasis sumber daya terbarukan.
