The excursion study conducted inThe 2ndWinterSchool Programwith the themeTropical Biodiversity and Sustainability: Marine Chapterwas conducted on Pramuka Island, Seribu Islands on January 16-24, 2018.
In the series of events, the participants, who were a combination of FMIPA UI and Leiden Universitiet students, conducted severalobservationprojects in the marine field. Theprojectconsisted of marine themes that would later be linked tosustainabilityon the island. These themes consisted ofThe anthropogenic factors toward percentage coral coverage , The interaction between macroalgae and lifeform coral in Pramuka Island and Air Island, Seribu Island, Mangrove ecosystem service at Pramuka Island, Ornamental fish trading and its effect on sustainability (Panggang Island case study), Sea turtles conversation in Pramuka Island, Overexploration of edible species in the intertidal zone.
The observations were a new experience for the participants, especially Leiden University students who have diverse educational backgrounds, both social and scientific. They were also required to interact with officers from the Seribu Islands National Park, based on Pramuka Island, and with local residents through interviews. Some topics even required participants tosnorkeland learn specifically about coral reefs. This did not deter the participants from working together and conducting thorough observations. Therefore, each topic was accompanied by several lecturers, national park officers, and Biology alumni from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), who are experts in the marine field.
In addition to Pramuka Island, several other islands were also visited for observational data collection. For the coral reef and turtle topic, participants visited Air Island, while theornamental fish tradinggroup conducted a case study on Panggang Island.
To complement the activities, participants also visited the Marine Protected Area located between three islands: Pramuka Island, Panggang Island, and Karya Island. They also visited the waters of Semak Daun Island, where all participants participated inisland hoppingandsnorkelingafter completing their observations.
The results of the participants’ observations conducted over the week will be presented at the One Day Seminar on Marine Tropical Diversity and Sustainability on January 25, 2018 at the FMIPA UI campus.
