Biochemistry is one branch of science that focuses on the structure and function of biological molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, etc. Biochemistry brings together chemistry and biology, explores chemical and biological processes in cellular and molecular level. By using chemical theories and application, for instance, biochemists should comprehend the function of a molecule with the relation to its structure, enabling them to presume how molecules will interact.
Biochemistry covers a wide range of scientific division, namely microbiology, medicines, forensics, etc. In this case, biochemists are recommended to have a strong background of natural sciences. They are expected to have many transferable skills, such as analytical, communication, research, problem solving, numerical, written, observational as well as planning.
In the Chemistry Department, Universitas Indonesia, the teaching programs of Biochemistry Department actualizes a fundamental approach to the chemistry of life as well as presenting the collaboration of biochemistry with other science divisions.
Following are the subjects:
- Chemical Toxicology
- Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Research in Biochemistry Department is designed to keep updated with the most recent topics, covers some important major in Biochemistry fields, including bioinformatics, carbohydrate and protein engineering, enzyme isolation and characterization, chemical in toxicology and carsinogenesis.
Biochemistry Division at Department of Chemistry, Universitas Indonesia divided into 3 Research Groups (Toxicology, Bioinformatics and Enzyme Research Group).
