Synergizing Academics and Society: Five FMIPA UI Lecturers Win Awards at the 2024 PPM Festival

Five lecturers from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) from various departments were named as the Best Community Service in FMIPA UI in the Science and Technology Cluster category, by the Directorate Community Service and Empowerment (DPPM) UI. The award certificate for the best service was presented directly by the Director of PPM UI Prof. Agung Waluyo, Ph.D., on Friday (4/10/2024) at the Apung Room, UI Depok Campus, during the award night which was the peak of the 2024 UI Community Service and Empowerment Festival.

The five lecturers, namely Dr. Drs. Supriatna, M.T., M.Sc., and Dr. Taqyuddin, S.Sc., M.Hum. (Department of Geography), Dr. Eng. Supriyanto, S.Sc., M.Sc. (Geophysics Study Program), Dr. Retno Lestari, S.Sc., M.Sc. (Department of Biology), and Dr. rer. nat. Agustino Zulys, M.Sc. (Department of Chemistry), are considered to have extraordinary dedication and commitment in carrying out one of the pillars of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, namely community service.

From the assessment indicators measured based on the number of community service programs or activities, the form of activities, to the number of beneficiaries of community service activities carried out throughout 2020 – 2024, they were declared successful in bringing significant impacts to the community and local government. The benefits in question are the development of community insight, abilities, and skills in facing various challenges in the surrounding environment.

Dr. Drs. Supriatna, M.T., M.Si., was recorded as the best servant with the largest number of beneficiaries, namely 4,050 people consisting of residents in five villages in Sukabumi. Throughout 2020 – 2024, there were at least 7 community service programs that he and his team implemented. These programs focus on the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, geodatabase development, and tsunami disaster mitigation.

Furthermore, Dr. Taqyuddin, S.Si., M.Hum. recorded 1,600 beneficiaries from 5 community service programs run in Sumedang and Border Areas. Community service activities of Dr. Taqyuddin and his team, focused on equalizing the quality of education in the outermost areas, improving independent sanitation, and developing transportation systems.

Meanwhile, Dr. rer. nat. Agustino Zulys, M.Sc, is recorded to have held 10 community service programs located in Banyuwangi & Jabodetabek. His community service focused on training in making soap from used cooking oil waste, implementing school safety systems, and knowledge about science. A total of 391 people consisting of elementary to junior high school students, and community participants in the training received the benefits of Dr. Agustino and team’s community service activities.

Meanwhile, Dr. Retno Lestari, S.Si., M.Si. has 18 community service programs that have been implemented with her team. The community service held in Banten, Jakarta, Sumedang, Bekasi, and Wakatobi focuses on the development of MSME products, training related to sanitation, agriculture, and disaster mitigation, as well as efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. A total of 239 people have felt the benefits of Dr. Retno’s community service activities, they are students, farmers, children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), to the general public who are MSME actors.

Another researcher Dr. Eng. Supriyanto, S.Si., M.Sc. has carried out 7 community service activities focused on disaster mitigation, installation of EWAS innovation (earthquake detection system), real-time river water level monitoring, and disaster simulations in various provinces, such as West Sumatra, Banten, North Sulawesi, East Java, and West Java. More than 100 people consisting of community elements, students, and government received the benefits of Dr. Supriyanto and team’s community service.

Dean of FMIPA UI Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., conveyed his congratulations and appreciation for the awards received by his academicians. According to him, the achievement is not only an acknowledgement of high dedication and commitment, but also proof that FMIPA UI is always close to the community.

“Congratulations and our appreciation to the award-winning lecturers. This achievement is not only an acknowledgement of high dedication and commitment, but also proof that FMIPA UI is always close to the community,” said Prof. Dede.

Prof. Dede emphasized that FMIPA UI does not only focus on theory and academics, but also prioritizes the practical application of science in everyday life. With a collaborative approach, he continued, lecturers not only convey knowledge, but also inspire the community to actively participate in regional development and development.

He invited all academicians to continue to maintain a shared commitment to providing the best contribution to the sustainability of the nation, through the development of science and improving the quality of life of the surrounding community.

“We need to maintain and develop this commitment through close collaboration between academics and the community,” he said.

Furthermore, he hopes that close synergy between the academic world and society can increase the positive impact of the research and innovation produced.

The 2024 UI Community Service and Empowerment Festival is an annual activity held by the UI Community Service and Empowerment Directorate (DPPM) unit, as a form of socialization of Community Service and Empowerment programs that have been implemented in 2020-2024.

The festival titled “Sosia Saintika: Kelindan Asa dalam Karya Anak Bangsa” will take place for three consecutive days, starting from Wednesday to Friday (October 2–4, 2024) at the UI Library, Depok Campus. In this activity, FMIPA UI also showcased various superior innovative products by lecturers and students over the past three years at the innovation exhibition booth.
