The FMIPA UI Community Service Team Creates a Minatransporter Innovation to Maintain the Freshness and Durability of Fish

The FMIPA UI Community Service Team (Pengmas) consisting of 2 lecturers, namely Retno Lestari and Mufti Petala Patria, 2 assistants, and 11 students in collaboration with the Pandu Cendekia Foundation held an IPTEKS program for the people of Sumur District, Pandeglang, Banten on July 23-25, 2019, through the transportation interest development program.

Minatransporter is a formulated pellet that can provide reserve oxygen and nutrient supply in fish storage areas so that it can be used to extend the life span of fish during distribution to the market, especially outside the Pandeglang Regency area. The selling value of fish is expected to remain high because the fish are still fresh and healthy. Retno Lestari (Ketua Tim) menyampaikan Sosialisasi Minatransporter Kepada Nelayan

Team Leader Retno Lestari explained that Sumur District has high potential for fish farming. However, the problem faced by fishermen is that they still distribute fish using conventional, closed methods. This method only keeps the fish alive for three hours. As a result, the quality of the fish reaching the market is reduced, reducing the selling price.

Based on these problems, Retno explained that it is necessary to implement science and technology to provide solutions for fishermen so they can improve the quality of fish by improving its distribution.

“The transportation interest development program aims to address the problems fishermen often face regarding the freshness and durability of fish distributed outside the region,” Retno explained.

Before distributing the products to local fishermen, the Minatransporter product undergoes trials. One such trial involved carp traveling from Jakarta to Pandeglang. The results were satisfactory, with the fish surviving for over 12 hours. This means that Minatransporter is expected to preserve fish life up to four times better than conventional methods.

Penyuluhan Minatransporter Kepada Nelayan

The UI Community Service Team, along with partners, conducted outreach to fishermen about the minattransporter product. The event was met with great enthusiasm by the fishermen. Following the outreach, the event continued with a questionnaire to determine fishermen’s interest in the minattransporter product.

The Minatransporter program is expected to assist the fishing community in Sumur District with the distribution of fish farming products. Furthermore, this program will also support the development of the maritime area (minapolitan) designated by the government.
