The Importance of Data Science Education and Research: UI’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Holds Workshops and Adds Compulsory Courses

In this era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, issues related to data are frequently discussed, leading to the emergence of the term data science. In fact, the need for professionals with data science skills, such as data analysts, data scientists, and data engineers, is increasing in Indonesia.

This was stated by Alhadi Bustamam, Ph. D. as the head of the Data Science Center (DSC) and Head of the Masters Program in Mathematics, FMIPA UI.

“Data science is a new discipline, and people competent in this field are highly sought after by various companies and industries,” Alhadi told the FMIPA UI Public Relations team.

Against this backdrop, FMIPA UI, through the DSC, is committed to strengthening the foundations of data science education and research relevant to the competencies required by the industrial world.

This commitment, Alhadi continued, has received support from relevant leaders and is a shared concern at FMIPA UI, so it is necessary to carry out activities that support the advancement of data science and its application at the university with cases relevant to developments in the industrial world.

Dr. Techn. Djoko Triyono, Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, sees the importance of having competency in the field of data science, considering the increasing need for professional data science personnel in the industrial world.

Djoko emphasized that he and his staff, particularly those in charge of academic affairs, agreed to add the discipline that studies data to the 2020 curriculum as a compulsory subject for undergraduate Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science study programs.

To realize its commitment, DSC collaborated with Samsung R&D Indonesia (SRIN), represented by Risman Adnan, Director of Software at SRIN and a member of the DSC Advisory Board, to hold the Data Science School. This activity also received support from academics, practitioners, and industry figures such as Konvergen.AI and Glair.

The Data Science School was held at the Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia – Pertamina, UI campus, Depok, with three tracks or series of events.

Track 1 was held from September 18-20, 2019. In this track, participants learned about software algorithms. They were also provided with a solid conceptual understanding and practical skills for software development, covering common data structures and algorithms.

Meanwhile, in Track 2, which took place from September 26-28, 2019, participants received an introduction to data intelligence. In this track, presenters provided a fundamental and conceptual understanding of learning from data and practical skills in machine learning models.

Lastly, track 3, held on October 3-5, 2019, the presenter explained the basic and conceptual understanding of artificial intelligence, including neural networks and various deep learning architectures for vision, speech, and Natural Language Understanding (NLU).

The speakers were mathematics educators at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, including Dr.rer.nat. Hendri Murfi (big data specialist), Dr. Titin Siswantining, DEA (statistics specialist), and Devvi Sarwinda, S.Si, M.Kom (research specialist in biomedical informatics).

There were also practitioners, namely Afif Akbar Iskandar, S.Si, M.Kom, and researchers from DSC including Herley Shaori Al-Ash, M.Kom and team.

The practical sessions were led by Samsung R&D Indonesia (SRIN), GLAIR, and Konvergen.AI. These activities focused on theoretical concepts and practical application in real-world industrial situations.

On this occasion, Samsung R&D Indonesia (SRIN), Glair and Konvergen.AI also offered full-time jobs and internships to the participants.

About Data Science Center (DSC)

The Data Science Center (DSC) was established in December 2018 under the auspices of the Institute of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia.

The vision of this institution is to become a center for learning, development, and collaboration in data science, advanced programming, and big data which is professional for the University of Indonesia, industry, and the general public as well as being an incubator center for industrial development or start up bidang data science.

This vision is in line with the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 considering the importance of data for generations X to Z or the millennial generation to master.
