The UI Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Student Team Won First Place in the International Earth Science Video Competition

This was announced via a team email on December 16, 2021 and published on the website www.earthsciweek.org.

In the contest with the theme Water is Part of Life Around the World, the AAPG SC UI team submitted a video entitled “A Drop of Life”.

The six members of the AAPG SC UI team involved in making the video consisted of Azzahra Karin Ayadzani as the chair and editor, Natasya Alia Zahran as the editor, Khalisha Shafa Yumnanisa as the editor, Karina Sekar Arum as the voice actor, and Nadia Shebrina and Savira Syahfitri as the script writers.

The 2-minute, 57-second video was uploaded to the American Geosciences Institute’s YouTube channel on December 16, 2021.

Azzahra Karin Ayadzani explained that the background to the idea for making the video “A Drop of Life” was the team’s concern about the current condition of Indonesian waters.

Geographically, Indonesia is a maritime nation with the largest archipelago in the world. Two-thirds of Indonesia’s territory is ocean and one-third is land. This means Indonesia has abundant water supply potential.

“In this competition, we want to highlight the theme that Indonesia is an archipelagic and maritime nation, with abundant water resources, so we should be able to utilize these advantages effectively,” Azzahra told the FMIPA UI public relations team.

Unfortunately, this potential has not been fully utilized by the community. In fact, Azzahra said, almost all Indonesian waters are now increasingly polluted by the discovery of large amounts of waste.

“However, in reality, we haven’t been able to maximize our country’s potential. This is evident in the abundance of pollution, such as microplastic waste, flooding, and so on,” he added.

A Drop of Life is considered successful in describing how pollution has significantly affected the quality of water sources in Indonesia, complete with suggestions for improvements that must be made for the welfare of the community.

More broadly, the video content not only focuses on issues in the earth sector, but also includes points included in the global development agenda in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) program.

He hopes that his team’s video “A Drop of Life” can move the hearts of all elements of society to work together to contribute to maintaining environmental sustainability and wisely managing Indonesia’s natural resources.

The AAPG Student Chapter Video Contest 2021 is an annual competition organized by the American Geosciences Institute in collaboration with the AAPG Student Chapter: Asia Pacific Region as a creative platform for all AAPG-SCs from various universities around the world. Each SC is given the opportunity to do highlight terhadap rangkaian program yang dikemas dengan format video yang menarik dan kreatif.

The 2021 AAPG Student Chapter Video Contest was held in conjunction with Earth Science Week (ESW) 2021. The purpose of ESW is to broaden public understanding of earth science and demonstrate the importance of earth science’s role in helping to maintain the earth as an ideal habitat for human life.
