To Support Disaster Management, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) Sends Students to Sentani

Indonesia is in mourning again. Two weeks ago, on Saturday (March 16th), flash floods struck and devastated Sentani, the capital of Jayapura Regency, Papua. The floods killed more than 50 people, and thousands of residents were forced to evacuate to safer areas.

Today (March 22nd), the Geography Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (UI), part of the UI Cares team, with support from the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM), dispatched two students, Abdurrahman Aslam and Muhamad Iko Kersapati, to Sentani for the emergency response phase.

During this phase, the two students will strive to produce the latest spatial data from the Sentani flash flood events in the form of maps, which will be useful for operational purposes in the field.

These maps can also show regional zones and their level of vulnerability to potential natural disasters.

Over the next few days, until Tuesday (March 26), they will carry out tasks related to regional mapping, including collecting regional data and assessing damage and the impact of the disaster. They will also conduct social activities in Sentani.
