The world’s top university ranking agency, QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) by Subject, has released its latest rankings for 2024. The rankings show that two fields of study at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), namely Geography, and Physics and Astronomy, occupy the top positions as the best fields of study in Indonesia in the broad subject areas of natural sciences.
Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., stated, “The achievements in these two fields are extraordinary for the Faculty. This reflects the Faculty’s commitment to improving academic quality and reputation in the eyes of the international community. Hopefully, this achievement will further encourage the academic community, especially lecturers and researchers in other fields at the Faculty, to continue improving their research performance.”
This year, Geography is ranked 101-150, this achievement is certainly an improvement compared to the previous four consecutive years which placed Geography in positions 151-200. Meanwhile, Physics and Astronomy still maintain their rankings at positions 501-550.
In addition to these two fields of science, three other fields of science at FMIPA UI also participated in the QS WUR by Subject 2024 rankings, namely Mathematics ranked 501 – 550, Biological Sciences which is included in the broad subjects areas of Life Sciences & Medicine ranked 551 – 600, followed by Chemistry which this year succeeded in adding to the long list of achievements of FMIPA UI in the QS WUR by Subject by ranking 551 – 600.
The Dean is optimistic that in the future other fields of science at FMIPA UI will be able to add to the long list of achievements on the international stage. This is not impossible, because according to him, FMIPA UI continues to strive to improve its academic reputation both at the national and international levels, by actively conducting research and innovation activities, as well as opening the door to collaboration with partners both at home and abroad, to implement programs in the field of education and joint research, including through student mobility activities, student exchanges, writing scientific papers and organizing international seminars.
“We continue to foster collaboration with domestic and international partners in education and research. Many of our international partners conduct research in Indonesia. They ask lecturers at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, to collaborate on research papers, resulting in the names of FMIPA UI researchers appearing in these papers,” he added.
He hopes that this achievement will motivate the FMIPA UI academic community to work together to improve their performance, creativity, and research innovation, in line with efforts to realize FMIPA UI’s vision of becoming a leading science faculty in the field of science that is able to play a role at the global level to advance science and sustainable development.
