The Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (AUAV) Team of the University of Indonesia (UI), consisting of seven students from the Faculty of Engineering (FT) and two from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), departed for Turkey to take part in the Teknofest International Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Competition (September 13-18, 2021 at Bursa Yunuselli Airport, Turkey). The AUAV Team is part of the UI Robotics Team (TRUI), which is one of the Student Activity Units at UI that focuses on developing robots for national and international competitions.
UAV Competition is one of the world’s largest aviation festivals aimed at raising awareness of technology and science for the public, and increasing trained human resources in the field. Teknofest consists of 34 competition categories, including rockets, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, and underwater systems. One of the types competed is the category Fixed Wing & Vertical Take-off & Landing (VTOL).
Our main goal in participating in this competition is to improve our skills in the fields of mechanics, manufacturing, electronics, programming, strategy, image processing, komunikasi digital, dan soft skill others related to the world of robotics. In addition, we want to prove that UI also has student resources that are able to compete on an international scale and have competent, respectful, and adaptive abilities,” said Luthfi as the Team captain as reported from the ui.ac.id page.
To the FMIPA UI public relations team, two FMIPA UI students who participated in this world-class competition explained their respective duties and roles in this prestigious competition. Muhammad Rizky Millennianno (Physics 2019) explained that he started joining the AUAV UI team in 2020. At that time, he participated in the 2020 Indonesian Flying Robot Contest in the fixed Wing team branch called Cygnus, as a UAV avionics and control technical designer (Avionics and Control Engineer).
The experience led him to his current team, the UI AUAV International Team called Resendriya. Now his involvement has widened from previously only making technical designs for avionics and controls, now he also designs UAV software (software engineer).
“The Rasendriya Team participated in the Teknofest International UAV Competition 2021 Fixed Wing branch held at Bursa Yunuseli Airport, on September 13-18, 2021. In this competition, several aspects of the UAV made by the team will be tested with 2 missions; the first mission prioritizes agility and strength, while mission 2 prioritizes precision. I designed the UAV’s electronic system to remain safe when flying aggressively but still efficiently. In addition, I also adjusted the UAV’s controls to suit the nature of the aircraft which requires agility to complete the mission. Finally, I also created AI program software on the UAV to complete mission 2 which requires object detection,” said Rizky via the Whatsapp messaging application.
Meanwhile, Anindya Samiya Artanti (Mathematics) plays a role in compiling planning, administrative management, supervising the team in carrying out competitions, and managing the team’s finances. Not only that, the woman who is familiarly called Indy also bridges the team with external parties who also provide support to the team in the form of materials or other forms.
“Here, my role is to plan, manage and supervise the team in carrying out the competition. In addition, here I also do financial management of the team, connecting external parties with the internal team such as sponsor searches, relationships with the competition committee, publication media, and so on, as well as administrative management such as correspondence,” said Indy.
The aircraft designed by the UI AUAV team has several different configurations from ordinary aircraft, such as the shape of the fuselage equipped with two wings and one motor. This type of aircraft is popular in the agricultural and oil industries for mapping areas, such as mapping land contours.

To fulfill all these aspects, the flying robot frame made by the AUAV Team is made of fiber and foam agar rangka pesawat tetap kuat, namun ringan digunakan. Untuk keakuratan, robot terbang ini menggunakan flight controller with 32-bit architecture accompanied by a GPS tracker with coverage capability of approximately 20 satellites.
The implantation of this technology is used to ensure that the robot’s flight path can be accurately known. In terms of design, this flying robot is equipped with propellers that point backwards, so that when this robot hits an object, the object will not be cut by the robot’s propeller. This flying robot technology is equipped with assistance from Microsoft which is used to maximize the robot’s capabilities, such as GitHub, Microsoft Azure IoT Hub, Azure Time Series Insights, and Azure Maps.
By using GitHub, the programs in the robot computers can be updated quickly over the internet, while still being able to perform rollback (recall) if there is a problem. The need to read telemetry data real-time and storage of aircraft test data can be easily done with Microsoft Azure IoT Hub technology, Azure Time Series Insights, and Azure Maps. In addition, the AUAV team also uses Microsoft Excel in the analysis to obtain parameters in determining the type of design and optimal manufacturing mechanism in robot manufacturing.
“The entry of the UI AUAV team into the final round of the Teknofest International UAV” Competition is a very proud achievement and we should appreciate it. Their enthusiasm and dedication in developing fixed wing “This is an inspiration for Indonesia’s great potential in science and engineering. We are proud that our technology can help the team develop this flying robot. Hopefully, the achievements of the UI AUAV team can inspire more Indonesians to advance the world of science and technology, so that we can continue to empower Indonesia,” said Panji Wasmana, National Technology Officer, Microsoft Indonesia.
The UI AUAV team focuses on the type of drone competition. Previously, this team has won several awards, both national and international, including the award Mission Accomplishment at the 2020 Indonesian Flying Robot Contest in the category fixed wing dan finalis Teknofest UAV Competition 2020 in the same category.
And here is the list of names of the members of the AUAV UI team: Luthfi Aldianta (FT) as the team captain, FMIPA Rizky Millennianno (FMIPA) and Anindya Samiya Artanti (FMIPA) Muhammad Luqman Sugiyono (FT), Pramudita Bintang Al Hakam (FT), Adam Ilham Maulana (FT), Shang Welly Chin (FT), Daniel Martua Matthew Simatupang (FT), Raditya Aryaputra (FT).
