UI FMIPA Students Represent Indonesia in the International Scout Forum in Hong Kong

Faza Fahimatul ‘Ilmiyah, a student of Statistics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), had the opportunity to represent the Indonesian Scout Movement in the International Scout Youth Forum organized by the Scout Association of Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Scout Center, Scout Path, Austin Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong. With the theme Scouting in the Post-Pandemic World: A Redefinition, this activity aims to produce several recommendations as consideration for the National Scout Organization (NSO) in making decisions and strategies for the recovery of scouting activities after the Covid-19 pandemic in the future.

“Through this forum, I was able to see different perspectives on how NSOs in various countries have responded during the pandemic. The discussions will produce a youth forum declaration, which will be announced on the final day,” said Faza.

Previously, he received a recommendation from the UI Scout Leader to apply as a representative for the Indonesian Scout Movement. After going through several processes, Faza successfully received a recommendation from the National Scout Movement Headquarters to represent Indonesia in the event.

The event attracted over 40 participants from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mongolia, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Faza, an active member of the University of Indonesia Scouts, was the only Indonesian participant. There were two main activities: a discussion forum and an educational tour.

Faza explained that during the discussion forum, participants were divided into six groups, each discussing various topics on how to redefine scouting in general after experiencing significant changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the educational tour was uniquely packaged, using the concept of a game called Ponopoly. The game works similarly to Monopoly. Each group was guided by a committee member to complete missions while visiting key sites in Hong Kong.

“The most memorable thing for me was being a group representative on the declaration committee, tasked with preparing the declaration based on our previous discussions. It was an honor for me to be able to write the name of the Indonesian Scout Movement on the declaration drafting sheet,” said Faza, who also serves as Treasurer of the Student Activity Unit (UKM) Pramuka SEKAR Kalpavriksha Universitas Indonesia and Racana Stri Kalpavriksha.

UI Scout Leader, Dr. Retno Lestari, M.Sc., said that this activity was a great opportunity for UI Scouts to participate in the International Scout Youth Forum held in Hong Kong on April 28 to May 1. “Through this forum, we can exchange ideas and innovations related to scouting activities after the Covid-19 pandemic with various other countries. In addition, it is also important in establishing connections that will be useful for UI Scouts in future activities. I hope that after this activity, it will encourage UI students, especially UI Scout members, to be more actively involved in international activities and can bring good name to UI Scouts and the Indonesian Scout Movement. The results of this forum, hopefully, can be implemented by UI Scouts, the Scout Movement, and NSOs from other countries,” said Dr. Retno, who is also a lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UI.

The UI Scouts are not only positioned as a Student Activity Unit (UKM) known as “UKM Pramuka SEKAR Kalpavriksha Universitas Indonesia”, but also as a Scout Group (Gudep) based in a university, with the number Gudep 04-373 / 04-374 which was inaugurated on November 28, 1983. The UI Scouts as a vanguard group based in a university align the Tri Darma of Higher Education (Education and Teaching, Research and Development, and Community Service) with the Tri Bina Pramuka Pandega (Self Development, Unit Development, and Community Development). Its main activities include, orientation of the vanguard group guests, raising self-image, community service, unit development, kalpavriksha arena, scout visit and exchange, and others.
