The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), in collaboration with Leiden University, held its second Winter School program. This Winter School program focused on “Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainability: Marine Chapter.” The event took place from January 12-26, 2018.
This program is an internationalization program for the academic field of FMIPA UI, and is part of the SustainableDevelopmentprogram coordinated bythe Institute of Environmental Sciences(CML), Universiteit Leiden, Netherlands.
In the presence of the Deputy Head of Mission – Dutch Embassy for Indonesia, Mr. Ferdinand Lahnstein, Deputy Dean of Field II of FMIPA UI, Dr. Rokhmatulloh, M.Eng. representing the Dean of FMIPA UI, officially opened the event.
This activity involved 12 students from the University of Indonesia and 12 students from the University of Leiden, the Netherlands who wanted to learn about the issues and challenges faced in efforts to conserve diversity and ecosystem sustainability.
After several days of activities at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (UI) in Depok, the participants will participate in a 10-day field study program, from January 16-24, 2018, on Pramuka Island, in the Seribu Islands Marine National Park. On Pramuka Island, they will visit two turtle hatcheries: West Panjaliran and East Panjaliran. There, they will conduct joint research related to the assigned sub-themes and will make a final presentation on the results of their research.
To broaden the participants’ knowledge, FMIPA UI presents a number of competent speakers in their fields to deliver exclusive public lectures that can provide participants with an understanding of Indonesian culture and the themes raised by this program.
Some of the speakers included Prof. Melani Budianta who presented the material “Understanding Indonesian Culture: Unity in Diversity”, UI conservation biology expert Prof. Jatna Supriatna, Ph.D. who presented the material “Introduction to Indonesia’s Biodiversity & It’s Challenges”, and Director General of Nature Conservation of the Ministry of Environment Ir. Wiratno who presented the material “Marine Conservation in Indonesia: Future Challenge”.
The Winter School program is an initiative aimed at strengthening the partnership between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, and the Faculty of Science, University of Leiden, Netherlands. Through collaborative teaching and research programs that emphasize three key areas, including biological conservation and sustainability, it is hoped that the exchange of ideas and expertise between the two universities will be mutually beneficial.
Typically, selected participants will visit Leiden University in the same year to undertake a follow-up program. Similar to the program in Indonesia, in the Netherlands, participants will also undertake a short course, completing research, projects, and assignments.
