5 Fields of Science of FMIPA UI Return to the Rankings of the World Rankings by QS World University Ranking

Five fields of study at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of the University of Indonesia (UI) have again recorded proud achievements by entering the QS World University Rankings (WUR) 2025: Top Global Universities by Subject.

The five fields of science are GeographyMathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, which falls into the category Natural Sciences, as well as Biological Sciences in category Life Sciences & Medicine.

Some of them experienced an increase in ranking compared to the previous year. Field Chemistry rose to rank 551–600 from previously 601–650, while Biological Sciences It is now ranked in the 501–550 range, up from the 551–600 range. Mathematics It also experienced a rise to the 451–500 ranking, up from the previous 501–550 range.

Meanwhile, Geography remain at 101–150, while Physics and Astronomy still in the range of 501–550, the same as last year.

The Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., stated that this ranking improvement reflects the increasingly recognized academic and research quality of FMIPA UI on a global scale.

“This achievement is a clear testament to FMIPA UI’s dedication in building an excellent and competitive academic environment at the international level,” he said.

Prof. Dede added that this success cannot be separated from various strategic initiatives, including improving the quality of teaching, encouraging high-reputation scientific publications, and collaboration with academic and industrial partners, both domestically and abroad.

“With a strong commitment to continue to develop, FMIPA UI is optimistic in strengthening its role and contribution in the development of science, both in Indonesia and on the global stage,” he said.

He also appreciated the hard work of the entire academic community and the contribution of alumni who have played a role in this achievement.

“This success is the result of the synergy of the entire FMIPA UI academic community in improving the quality of education, research, and innovation, as well as the active role of alumni in various fields,” he added.

In agreement with the Dean, Munawar Khalil, Ph.D., the Internationalization and Global Ranking Manager at FMIPA UI, emphasized that these ranking results reflect an increase in FMIPA UI’s global visibility across various disciplines.

“The rise in rankings in Chemistry, Biological Sciences and Mathematics shows that the internationalisation, research collaboration and high-quality publications we have been promoting in recent years are paying off,” he said.

According to him, the involvement of academics and students in global research networks has had a positive impact on improving university rankings.

Moving forward, FMIPA UI will continue to develop more innovative academic initiatives and strengthen collaborations with partner universities and international research institutions.

“We are optimistic that we can open more opportunities for other fields of science at FMIPA UI to achieve a higher ranking at the world level,” concluded Khalil.

QS World University Rankings is a global university ranking system published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British company engaged in higher education analysis. The QS World University Ranking by Subjects 2025 is followed by more than 1,500 universities in 105 higher education systems. This ranking displays 55 narrow subjects grouped into 5 broad subjects.

There are five indicators in the ranking, namely Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations per Paper, H-Index, and International Research Network (IRN).

Academic Reputation is used to gather opinions from academics worldwide regarding their assessment of the respective universities. Employer Reputation evaluates employability metrics based on the reputation among employers. Citations per Paper serve as an indicator to measure the number of citations a publication receives, estimating the impact and quality of the scholarly work produced by the university.

Meanwhile, the H-Index measures the stability of the impact and quality of the works published by scientists, while the IRN (International Research Network) serves as a measure of efficiency in building research collaborations across various broad subject areas.
