The 2020 UI Mathematics Competition and Activities (LOGIKA), which is a work program of the Mathematics Department Student Association (HMDM) FMIPA UI 2019, entered its final day on Sunday, January 19, 2020.
LogiTalks is one of the final series of LOGIKA UI 2020 activities. LogiTalks is a national seminar and motivational show that discusses the world of mathematics and its applications in everyday life.
The LogiTalks event took place at the Center for Japanese Studies (PSJ) Building, University of Indonesia, Sunday (19/1/2020), and was attended by 126 people consisting of high school students, university students, and the general public.
The national seminar was opened by Shafira Bawazier, the chair of the alumni association (Iluni) of the Mathematics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, who currently serves as Actuarial Senior Manager at PT. Asuransi Jiwa Manulife.
In her material, Shafira conveyed the stages that need to be taken to become an actuary, as well as the fields of work carried out by an actuary.
In addition to Shafira, Ade Bungsu, a 1988 alumnus of the UI Mathematics Department and currently Chief of Proportion and Sharia at FWD Life, also attended. Ade also presented on actuarial matters.
The event concluded with a presentation on data science by Alamsyah Hanza, a 2011 alumnus of the UI Mathematics Department and currently a data scientist at Gojek.
In addition to a seminar, LogiTalks also included a Motivational Show featuring Billy Kurniawan, a math content creator and currently a Mathematical Science student at Nanyang Technological University Singapore.
Modified by Mahesa Oktareza, the 2019 Chair of the Student Association of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (HMDM) at UI, Billy discussed the role of mathematics in everyday life and its impact on society at large.
Billy also stated that mathematics plays a significant role and makes significant contributions to the Indonesian nation and state.
“Yes, mathematics certainly contributes to the nation and state, but perhaps the impact is not direct. I mean, mathematics can improve a person’s logical abilities and can also develop good problem-solving skills, thereby improving the quality of human resources in Indonesia,” Billy said.
In addition to providing insight into mathematics in everyday life, Billy also shared that he has been actively participating in the Mathematics Olympiad since elementary school and shared tips and tricks for getting a scholarship to study abroad.
