Admissions for new postgraduate study programs for the odd semester, second wave, at the University of Indonesia has opened. The registration period for prospective students starts from May 12 – June 13, 2022.
During this period, precisely on Friday (3/6/2022), the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) through the Department of Biology held a Virtual Open House for the Postgraduate Study Program in Biology (Masters and Doctoral), and Masters of Marine Science.
Head of the Biology Department Anom Bowolaksono, Ph.D. who was also the moderator at this event said that the virtual open house event aims to socialize the postgraduate study programs (Prodi) in the Biology Department, FMIPA UI.
“This event is expected to provide complete information about the admission pathway, lecture activities, department vision and mission, curriculum, facilities, lecturers and research groups to prospective students,” said Dr. Anom.
Prof. Dr. Jatna Supriatna M.Sc, Professor of Biology, FMIPA UI opened the event. In his speech, Prof. Jatna conveyed the importance of the role of Biology researchers in exploring the potential of Indonesia’s biodiversity and solving various global issues related to biology, one of which is the issue of climate change and conservation. These researchers are expected to be the backbone in realizing the strengthening of ecosystems, restoring nature, and encouraging the development of science for the sustainability of the earth.
“There is a very interesting paper that states that the development of our science today can be seen since the 18th century, the 19th century, to the 20th century which is very interesting because there are many developments in scientific needs. Then in the 21st century, biology is developing even faster because of Artificial Intelligence, Internet Of Think, Edited Gen, and others,” said Prof. Jatna.
Next is the presentation by the speakers, namely Dr. Dian Hendrayanti, M.Sc., Head of the Master and Doctoral Program in Biology, and Dr.rer.nat. Yasman, M.Sc., Head of the Master of Marine Science Program.
The postgraduate program of the Department of Biology, FMIPA UI has two admission pathways, namely lecture pathway and research pathway. Lecture pathway students are required to complete 36 credits and 1 publication, while doctoral students are required to complete 42 credits and 2 publications. Meanwhile, in the research pathway, master’s level students are required to complete 36 credits and 2 publications, while doctoral level students must complete 42 credits and 3 publications where one publication is international. Both master’s and doctoral programs have their own curriculum and publication obligations.
In addition, the Department of Biology has 5 Research Groups, Community Ecology and Environmental Biology (CEEB), Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms in Biological Systems (CEMBIOS), Metabolomics and Chemical Ecology (MeCE), Microbial Systematics and Prospecting (MSP) and Wildlife Biology and Sustainable Landscape (WILD).
Prospective students can choose a research group that suits their research interests. There is also the field of Marine Physical Science that can be studied and researched by prospective marine science master students.
In addition to the presentations from the speakers, this Virtual Open House also opened a discussion session and Q&A session for participants to the speakers. The enthusiasm of the participants was very high, as seen by the many questions regarding the details of the Biology and Marine Science postgraduate study program, including regarding the offer of institutional cooperation between the Department of Biology, FMIPA UI and partner institutions that provide opportunities for prospective students to get support in continuing their education.
