A Medical Physics Expert from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, Earns a Doctorate for Studying the Physics of Interventional Radiology

Lukmanda Evan Lubis officially received his Doctorate in Physics through the Open Promotion Session for the Postgraduate Physics Doctoral Study Program, which was held virtually on Friday, December 10, 2021.

He defended his dissertation entitled “Novel Phantom for Three-Dimensional Rotational Angiography (3DRA): Design, Testing, and Application”.

In his presentation, the medical physicist from the University of Indonesia Hospital (RS UI) explained the journey of quality assurance phantom innovation for 3D Rotational Angiography (3DRA), starting from material selection based on radiation interaction characteristics, geometry studies to obtain relevant design forms, prototype testing, to implementation on interventional fluoroscopy machines with 3DRA features.

“The background to this research is the lack of a dedicated phantom for 3DRA quality assurance, while the phantoms currently in use are generally intended for other modalities such as Computed Tomography (CT-Scan). However, according to Dr. Evan, this feature is already widely used clinically and requires routine quality testing by medical physicists,” Dr. Evan explained to the FMIPA UI Public Relations team.

Furthermore, he said that the results of his research could be recommendations for the design of a multi-purpose 3DRA quality assurance phantom, namely for the radiation dose and image quality aspects.

Previously, the 32-year-old man had passed the pre-promotion exam on November 3, 2021. His success in pursuing education and research in this Doctoral study program cannot be separated from the guidance of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Terry Mart (FMIPA UI) as promoter and Prof. Dr. Djarwani S. Soejoko (FMIPA UI) and Prof. Dr. Ir. Hilde Bosmans (Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven) as co-promoters.
