Biology Students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, Participate in a Short Summer Course at Leiden University

Three students from the biology department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, participated in the Short Summer Course at Leiden University. They are Balqis Arche Nofinska, Sarah Audadi Ilham, and Rani Octaviani. They arrived atSchipol Airport,Leiden, on Friday (August 11).

During the approximately one-month Summer Course at Leiden University, they conducted several research projects and assignments. Among them, research on photosynthesis was conducted by measuring NPQ ETR and Y(II) using the Junior PAM tool on algae species found in the field. A DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) project was conducted in groups. Each group isolated DNA from seawater obtained from the Roscoff coast, France. After isolation, purification and sequencing were carried out on the DNA samples. The resulting sequences were then processed and the genes identified. The final result of the project was an individual report.

In addition to biological field observations, they also conducted geological field observations in various locations. Observed during the observations were rocks, minerals, rock layer structures, folds, and other things. Activities during the observations included measuring the dipping direction and dipping arrow of each fold, estimating geological time, and considering processes that may have occurred in the past in each area based on the observed geological phenomena. The final assignment was a group report containing the results of fossil findings, block diagrams, and cross-sections of all observations conducted.
