FMIPA UI Opens Medical Physics Masters Study Program

Universitas Indonesia (UI) has opened a new study program, namely the Medical Physics Masters program under the auspices of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA). The opening of this study program is stated in the Decree of the UI Chancellor Number: 2256/SK/R/UI/2020 on December 14, 2020 concerning the Permit to Open the Medical Physics Study Program in the Masters Program of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia.

The UI Medical Physics Masters study program was previously a Medical Physics interest that had been developed for 20 years in the Department of Physics, FMIPA UI. This study program was established with the aim of producing competent Medical Physicists to meet the needs of hospitals in radiotherapy, radiodiagnostics, and nuclear medicine services.

Prospective new UI master’s program students for the 2021/2022 academic year can now choose their study programs through the SIMAK UI exam. The UI new student admission schedule and exam schedule can also be seen on the admissions.ui.ac.id page.

There are 2 (two) study paths offered for prospective students who will choose this study program, namely Regular and Research. In the regular class, students attend lectures through structured learning in class on Monday-Friday, carry out field study programs, and take mid-semester and final semester exams.

Unlike the regular pathway, there is no structured lecture schedule in the research pathway. Students are focused on completing research according to the topics of interest. The topic has previously been submitted through a proposal to the prospective supervisor at the interview stage.

As individuals who will practice in a clinical environment, graduates of this study program are required to follow a clinical residency program for at least 2 years under the guidance of a qualified clinical supervisor to obtain a certificate of competency. Graduates who successfully obtain the certificate of competency will be given a Medical Physicist Registration Certificate (STR) from the Indonesian Health Workforce Council (KTKI).

Furthermore, job prospects for graduates from the medical physics study program include working in the medical device industry, becoming product specialists in medical device companies, research and development centers, and policy makers in the Ministry of Health or the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency.

Medical Physics according to the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) is the application of physics that focuses on the technology of prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of diseases. The scope of Medical Physics that is studied includes Radiotherapy Physics, Diagnostic Imaging Physics, Nuclear Medicine Physics, Health Physics (radiation protection), Non-ionizing Imaging and Therapy, physiological measurements and biomedical materials/instrumentation.
