FMIPA UI Launches Marine Education Module: Technological Innovation and Coastal Potential for a Sustainable Future

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), through the SustainaBlue team, officially introduced an online learning module entitled “Marine Technology and Coastal Biological Potential” on Friday (August 15, 2025) at the Pertamina Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building, FMIPA UI.

This module is part of the development of the SustainaBlue online course, which can be accessed by universities in Indonesia and Malaysia, and serves as an important part of efforts to promote the blue economy and green transition in the Southeast Asian region.

“Through this, students and the academic community at FMIPA UI can learn about the application of biotechnology to marine and coastal resources in a sustainable manner. Technologies such as GIS and omics can be utilized for resource mapping, while also examining emerging ecological, social, and economic challenges. All of this is carried out by upholding the principles of sustainability, ethics, and inclusivity,” said Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Mufti Petala Patria, M.Sc., SustainaBlue Project Manager at FMIPA UI.

This module is intended not only for academics but also for the private sector and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the fields of marine and environmental affairs. In addition to UI, the SustainaBlue project also presents various interesting topics from partner universities, such as “Sustainable Fisheries” by ITS, “Marine & Ecosystem Health” by USM, and “Marine Debris” by UMT.

In this outreach event, FMIPA UI also introduced the official program website at https://sustainablue-project.eu/id/ This platform serves as an information hub to access learning materials, job opportunities, internship programs, academic mobility, as well as collaborative activities in the development of the blue economy.

The outreach event, titled Info Event 2 SustainaBlue, was attended by 57 participants from various backgrounds, including lecturers, laboratory staff, undergraduate and graduate students of FMIPA UI, representatives from the private sector such as PT Ecosains Hayati and PT Pandu Anugerah Analitika, as well as members of the general public concerned with marine environmental issues.

FMIPA UI also emphasized the importance of strengthening the capacity of coastal communities through the development of relevant curricula, community service activities, and raising awareness of the importance of preserving marine ecosystems for the sustainability of Indonesia’s biological resources.

The SustainaBlue program itself is a collaboration between Indonesia and Malaysia funded by the European Union, involving universities and institutions from Indonesia, Malaysia, Greece, and Cyprus. International partners taking part include the University of the Aegean, University of Cyprus, Symplexis, AEGEAN Rebreath, the Center for Social Innovation (CSI), and the Malaysia Aquaculture Development Association.
