The University of Indonesia (UI) has added a new study program, namely the Bachelor of Actuarial Science, which is under the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UI (FMIPA UI). Registration for the Bachelor of Actuarial Science Study Program (Regular Class) FMIPA UI itself will open next year, namely in the 2018/2019 academic year. The launch of the Bachelor of Actuarial Science Study Program was marked by the signing of an MOU between UI and the READI Project (Risk Management, Economic Sustainability and Actuarial Science Development in Indonesia) and an MOU between UI and Prudential Indonesia. The launch of the Bachelor of Actuarial Science Study Program and the signing of this MOU were carried out on Monday (14/8) at the FMIPA UI Depok campus.
The signing of the MoU was carried out by UI Rector Prof. Dr. Ir Muhammad Anis M.Met., and READI Canadian Field Director William Duggan, as well as Prudential Indonesia President Director Jens Reisch witnessed by the Director General of Strengthening Research and Development of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia Dr. Muhammad Dimyati, Counselor (Development) Embassy of Canada Mr. John Summerbell, First Secretary (Development) Embassy of Canada Abdullah Mojaddedi, Chief Financial Officer of Prudential Indonesia Aaron Fryer, Chairman of PAI Rianto Ahmadi Djojosugito, Director of Statistics & Information IKNB OJK Asep Suwondo, and Director of Cooperation UI Dr. Ir. Dodi Sudiana, M.Eng. The scope of cooperation between these institutions includes the development of the actuarial profession based on certification issued by the Indonesian Actuarial Association (PAI), improving human resources in the field of teaching and developing research in the actuarial field.
In his remarks, Prof. Muhammad Anis said, “As a university that bears the great name of the Indonesian nation, UI is committed to answering the nation’s challenges by managing and developing more specific, focused and directed study programs in creating experts, in this case in the field of Actuarial Science. It is hoped that with the opening of this Actuarial Science Undergraduate Study Program, FMIPA UI can become a producer of actuarial experts who are much needed by the insurance and financial industry in Indonesia.” Furthermore, the Dean of FMIPA UI, Dr. Abdul Haris added, “The establishment of this study program is based on the large need for actuaries in Indonesia and the large number of enthusiasts for actuarial courses in the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UI. Actuaries must be produced from institutions that have experience in management and academic systems with good credibility in Indonesia, the Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UI is ready to actively participate in providing reliable Actuarial Human Resources.”
The Actuarial Science Undergraduate Program will be supported by expert faculty, equipped with access to the world’s leading online journals and supported by high-tech PCs and computing workstations connected to a gigabyte internet network. The Actuarial Science Undergraduate Program, through the Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, has collaborated with Islamic Education (PAI) in equating the Actuarial professional exam with courses in the Actuarial Science Undergraduate Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia. Actuarial Science Undergraduate students also have the opportunity to obtain various scholarship opportunities at UI. The teaching system and curriculum provided directly also prepare Actuarial Science Undergraduate students, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, to be able to face professional certification exams both nationally and internationally.
With the mission of becoming a study program with a national reputation and international standards in all aspects of educational activities, research and community service, it is hoped that graduates of the Actuarial Science Bachelor’s program, FMIPA UI, can become practitioners who are able to understand actuarial concepts supported by critical and logical analytical skills, are able to solve actual business problems, and are able to collaborate, communicate and be responsible according to their fields of knowledge both nationally and internationally.
