FMIPA UI – BAPETEN Collaborate to Hold 2020 Nuclear Safety Seminar

Universitas Indonesia (UI) through the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UI) in collaboration with the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) held the 2020 Nuclear Safety Seminar entitled “Innovations to Support Nuclear Safety and Security for Advanced Human Resources and Excellent Indonesia”. The seminar, which was held virtually on Monday (26/10), was witnessed by approximately 300 participants. The seminar was opened by Head of BAPETEN Prof. Dr. Jazi Eko Istiyanto, M.Sc. IPU, ASEAN Eng, and Rektor UI Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E, M.A, Ph.D. Turut hadir pula Wakil Rektor UI bidang Akademik dan Kemahasiswaan, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Abdul HarisDekan FMIPA UI Dr. Rokhmatuloh, S.Si., M.Eng, And Guru Besar Fisika FMIPA UI Prof. Djarwani S. Soeyoko.

The cooperation between UI and BAPETEN has a very important role in terms of developing science and technology, as well as providing human resources, especially in supporting the supervision of nuclear energy utilization in Indonesia. In his speech, Rektor UI Prof. Ari Kuncoro said, “This seminar is expected to be a forum for scientific discussion and the dissemination of science and technology, especially in the field of nuclear energy utilization supervision. The proposed UI-BAPETEN collaboration opportunities can revolve around the development of human resources in the field of nuclear energy supervision; empowerment of experts owned by UI and BAPETEN; and utilization of study/research results that support nuclear energy supervision.”

In the seminar, three major topics were presented, namely regarding “Implementing Radiation Safety Standards in Medicine during Normal Times as well as during The COVID-19 Pandemic” by Dr. Ola Holmberg, Ph.D, from the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). Next, the topic “The Influence of COVID-19 Pandemic on Nuclear Surveillance Activities by BAPETEN” by the Head of BAPETEN. Finally, the topic “Science and Technology Globalization (Thought and Reflection)” by Prof. Djarwani S. Soeyoko, Professor of Physics, FMIPA UI.

On that occasion, Kepala BAPETEN Prof. Jazi said, “Nuclear power can provide benefits to society, but on the other hand, it has risks if it is not properly supervised. Therefore, in an effort to reduce the potential risks, strict supervision is needed based on the aspects of safety, security, and safeguards or 3S. Science and technology on the use of nuclear power provide significant opportunities for society, such as the use of nuclear power to meet electricity needs in the future which is ultimately expected to achieve prosperity and energy independence for the Indonesian nation. For this reason, collaboration with universities, one of which is UI, is strategic. It is hoped that the more active role of scientific thinkers in the nuclear field will increase proportionally with the role of expertise in all fields.”

The holding of seminars in the field of nuclear energy supervision is one of the means to increase the role of academics, experts and the public. This activity is expected to increase the effectiveness of nuclear energy supervision that is in synergy with global developments, so that the participation of domestic and foreign parties related to nuclear safety becomes very important.

Wakil Rektor UI, Prof. Haris added, “Academic support can strengthen the supervisory function carried out by BAPETEN. As a center for science and culture, UI has three scientific fields, namely science technology, health, and social humanities. Thus, the coverage results of studies and recommendations produced by UI can be comprehensive. We are experienced in elaborating the three scientific fields to answer, provide solutions to the challenges and problems faced by society and the government.”
