FMIPA UI Hosts Regional Selection of ONMIPA-PT 2025, Contestants Showcase Their Competitiveness in Science

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), held the regional selection of the 2025 National Mathematics and Natural Sciences Olympiad for Higher Education (ONMIPA-PT) online on Sunday–Monday, September 21–22, 2025. The competition took place at the Computer Laboratory, Pertamina Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building, FMIPA UI, UI Depok Campus.

The participants came from four fields of study being contested, namely Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Of the total participants, 16 were students from FMIPA UI, while the other four were from the Faculty of Medicine (FK), Faculty of Engineering (FT), and Faculty of Nursing (FIK). They had previously passed the university-level selection held online on January 25, 2025.

UI is part of Region III, which includes universities in DKI Jakarta Province. At the regional level, only the top 65 participants from each field will be selected to advance to the national stage.

The regional ONMIPA-PT competition was held over two days, with different subject coverage in each field. In Mathematics, for instance, participants faced problems in Real Analysis, Algebraic Structures, Combinatorics, as well as Linear and Complex Algebra. The Chemistry field tested knowledge in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical, Physical, and Inorganic Chemistry. The Biology field included Microbiology, Genetics, Ecology, and Bioinformatics. Meanwhile, the Physics field covered Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, and Modern Physics.

Full support came from the faculty leadership. The Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., expressed his appreciation to the students representing UI in this competition.

“I truly appreciate the enthusiasm and dedication of UI students participating in ONMIPA-PT 2025. This is not only a platform to showcase academic ability, but also a space to foster character, perseverance, and integrity. I am confident that UI students can give their best and bring honor to the university at the national level,” said Prof. Dede.

Prof. Dr. Dewi Susiloningtyas, S.Si., M.Si., Manager of Student Affairs at FMIPA UI, explained that prior to the event, the committee recorded a change in the participants’ composition. Four students who had previously passed the university-level selection had to be replaced because they had graduated from UI before the regional selection was held.

This change occurred due to the postponement of the regional selection schedule from the original plan by the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs, Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek), which caused several participants to lose their status as active students by the time the event took place. As a follow-up, the positions of the graduated participants were replaced by students with the next highest scores from the previous UI-level ONMIPA-PT selection, according to their respective fields.

“We took this step to uphold the principle of fair and merit-based selection. FMIPA UI ensures that all participants sent are still the best students and truly deserving of representing UI at the regional level,” explained Prof. Dewi.

The results of the regional selection are scheduled to be announced on October 6, 2025. The qualified participants will compete at the national level, which is planned to be held on November 16–20, 2025, at a venue still awaiting confirmation from the central committee.

At the national level, each field will compete for 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals, 7 bronze medals, and 5 honorable mention awards.
