FMIPA UI Launches International Class Program Through Collaboration with University of Queensland and Monash University

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI) officially launched the Special International Class Program (KKI) for three undergraduate study programs: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The soft launch held on Friday (November 21) in the Prof. Dr. Ir. Soemantro Brodjonegoro Hall, UI Depok Campus, marks a major step for FMIPA UI in strengthening the internationalization agenda of science education.

The launch was carried out by the Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., together with the Director of UI Education Internationalization, Fadhilah Muslim, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., DIC. This program is the first international class at FMIPA UI with a globally standardized curriculum through collaboration with two renowned research universities in Australia, University of Queensland (UQ) and Monash University.

In his remarks, Prof. Dede stated that the launch of the International Class Program (KKI) is an important milestone that has long been prepared. ‘We have long awaited the launch of this International Class, after going through a process of strengthening the curriculum, expanding our global collaboration network, and building a competitive academic ecosystem. The internationalization of education is essential for universities to produce graduates who can compete at the global level,’ he said.

He emphasized that this program will open wider access for students to gain international-level academic experiences while also strengthening UI’s position within the global higher education network.

On the same occasion, the Director of Education Internationalization at UI, Fadhilah Muslim, stated that UI continues to expand its international partnership network to attract more international students. ‘UI is targeting 3,000 international students to study at UI. To achieve this, we are actively building collaborations and conducting visits to various countries, including our recent visits to several universities in China and a number of Middle Eastern countries that have great potential,’ he explained.

The Manager of Internationalization and Global Ranking at FMIPA UI, Munawar Khalil, S.Si., M.Eng.Sc., Ph.D., explained that the collaboration between FMIPA UI and UQ and Monash University is designed to strengthen the foundation of science education internationalization. This collaboration results in a 2+2 joint degree scheme for the Chemistry, Physics, and Biology study programs, and also opens student access to various new majors such as Food Technology, Environmental Sciences, Genetics, Plant Science, Applied Mathematics, and Earth Science.

“The collaboration with the University of Queensland and Monash University strengthens the internationalization of science education through a 2+2 joint degree scheme and access to major new study options,” Khalil said.

Khalil added that the selection of the University of Queensland and Monash University was not only due to their global reputation and academic strength, but also because both institutions have a long history of collaborating with FMIPA UI. This long-term partnership has produced various joint academic and research activities, forming a strong foundation for developing an internationally oriented International Class Program (KKI).

“Both universities were also chosen because of their long-standing history of collaboration with FMIPA UI, which forms the foundation of the KKI program,” he added.

Academically, the University of Queensland is known as one of the leading research universities with strengths in science, biotechnology, energy, environmental studies, and multidisciplinary research. UQ also has international-standard laboratory facilities and an extensive global industry network. Meanwhile, Monash University is a world-class institution excelling in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, environmental science, and materials science, and is recognized for its innovative problem-based learning approach. Monash also has an international campus network that supports student mobility and collaboration.

The FMIPA UI International Class Program (KKI) is scheduled to begin accepting applications in 2026, in line with the completion of the curriculum, the readiness of learning infrastructure, and the finalization of the global collaboration scheme.

The soft launching event was also attended by the Chair of the FMIPA UI Academic Senate, Adi Wibowo, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D.; managers; department leaders; heads of study programs; lecturers; student representatives; as well as the Country Manager – Indonesia and Philippines for the University of Queensland, Fitria Arsianti.

The launch of the KKI Program is expected to strengthen the global academic atmosphere at FMIPA UI and open wider opportunities for students to collaborate, compete, and create at the international level.
