FMIPA UI Launches Three New Study Programs to Improve the Quality of Indonesia’s Human Resources

Depok, April 24, 2025 The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) officially launched three new study programs this academic year. The programs include the Doctoral Program (S3) in Geography, the Doctoral Program (S3) in Mathematics, and the Medical Physicist Professional Program. This launch is part of FMIPA UI’s efforts to strengthen its contribution to the development of science and meet the need for high-quality human resources in Indonesia.

The Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., revealed that these three study programs are designed to address challenges in scientific development and professionalism, which are increasingly needed across various sectors—whether in academia, industry, or public service.

“We see a need to expand scientific capacity and professionalism in facing global challenges. The Geography and Mathematics Doctoral Program will strengthen FMIPA UI’s position in producing international quality researchers, while the Medical Physicist Professional Program is here to meet the demands of the health world that increasingly relies on sophisticated technology,” said Prof. Dede at the UI Depok Campus.

Furthermore, Prof. Dede added that the launch of these new programs also strengthens the position of FMIPA UI as an innovative and responsive higher education institution to the development of the times. This is in line with the vision of the University of Indonesia to become a world-class university.

“By opening these three study programs, FMIPA UI not only enriches the quantity of educational programs, but also improves the quality of graduates who can contribute significantly both at the national and global levels,” he added.

The Doctoral Program in Geography was launched in response to the need for in-depth studies on spatial and environmental issues, especially in the context of climate change, disaster resilience, and sustainable development. This program emphasizes the restructuring of spatial concepts and models based on spatial information technology as a basis for decision-making in sustainable resource management with a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary approach.

Meanwhile, the Doctoral Program in Mathematics focuses on developing both theoretical and applied studies in mathematics, statistics and data science, as well as actuarial science, supporting innovations in information technology, finance, and Industry 4.0. This program aims to produce graduates capable of meeting the needs of both the education sector and various industries, such as finance, actuarial science, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and information technology.

Both doctoral programs offer two study tracks: the coursework-research track and the research-only track, tailored to the students’ academic backgrounds and needs.

The Medical Physicist Professional Program was created to meet the demand for professionals in healthcare services based on radiation technology. With a curriculum focused on clinical practice, this program prepares graduates to become Medical Physicists ready to contribute in the fields of Radiotherapy, Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine in hospitals.

“The medical world increasingly needs professionals who understand the physics behind diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. We are here to bridge that need with a solid academic approach and best practices,” explained Prof. Dede.

Admissions for the Doctoral Program in Geography and Doctoral Program in Mathematics will be opened through the University of Indonesia Entrance Selection (SIMAK UI) during the Wave II registration period, which will run from May to June 2025, as well as through the Even Wave of SIMAK UI in October 2025. Meanwhile, admissions for the Medical Physicist Professional Program will only be opened through SIMAK UI Wave II.

FMIPA UI is committed to producing outstanding graduates who contribute to the advancement of science and technology. With various innovative study programs, FMIPA UI continuously strives to improve the quality of education and research to support national and global development.
