FMIPA UI Promotes Natural Resource Downstreaming Through the Strengthening of a Collaborative Research Ecosystem

Strengthening the national research ecosystem through collaboration among universities, industry, and government is considered key to accelerating the downstreaming of research outcomes toward national technological independence. In this regard, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), as a leading science faculty in Indonesia, plays an important role in bridging academic research with industrial needs.

FMIPA UI’s commitment was realized through the 4th series of MIPATalk, themed “Integrated Research Innovation to Achieve Impactful Natural Resource Downstreaming for the Advancement of a Sovereign Nation,” held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at the Prof. Dr. Ir. Soemantri Brodjonegoro Hall, UI Campus, Depok.

The event, attended by around 40 participants consisting of lecturers and postgraduate students, featured Dr. Adhi Indra Hermanu, Head of the Downstreaming and Industry Team, Directorate General of Research and Development, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Science and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek), as the keynote speaker.

In his presentation, Dr. Adhi emphasized the importance of building strong collaboration between the research and industrial sectors so that research outcomes do not merely end up in journals but can be implemented in real-world applications.

“Research downstreaming is not just about commercialization, but about how the academic world can address industrial challenges and create direct impact for society. We must build national sovereignty through integrated and sustainable innovation,” said Dr. Adhi.

He explained that the government has prepared various downstreaming schemes to strengthen the connection between research and industry. The Industry Initiative Scheme provides opportunities for industry players to convey their technological needs that can be addressed by universities. The Technology Advancement Scheme focuses on curating research outputs to make them ready for commercialization, while the Synergy Scheme promotes sustainable collaboration between universities and industry partners to accelerate the transformation of research results into commercial products or social innovations.

FMIPA UI itself holds great potential in supporting the national downstreaming agenda through various leading research initiatives in science, technology, and environmental studies. The faculty continues to expand its collaborative network with industries and research institutions to ensure that research outcomes have high applicability and relevance to societal needs.

“We aim to develop solution-oriented research that creates real impact. Collaboration with industry and government enables research from the university to be translated into useful products and technologies,” said Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Budiawan, Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs at FMIPA UI.

After the presentation, the event continued with a discussion and Q&A session moderated by Astari Dwiranti, M.Eng., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Department of Biology, FMIPA UI. The session was highly interactive, with participants raising various questions about strategies to strengthen the bridge between academia and industry, as well as opportunities for research commercialization in Indonesia.

Through the MIPATalk series, FMIPA UI strives to be a driving force in strengthening a collaborative, impactful, and technology-independent national research ecosystem. A solid collaboration between universities, industry, and government is expected to accelerate the emergence of innovations that provide added value for national development.
