FMIPA UI Wins First Place in UI Green Metric Award 2024, Commitment to Realizing Sustainable Campus

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) has successfully won first place in the UI Green Metric Award 2024, making it the most sustainable faculty in the University of Indonesia (UI). This award was presented directly to the Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., at the peak of UI’s 74th Anniversary held at the UI Hall, Monday (3/2/2025).

This achievement is a significant improvement compared to the previous year, where FMIPA UI was ranked third. Prof. Dede emphasized that this success cannot be separated from FMIPA UI’s consistency in supporting and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is a global agenda to create sustainable development.

“We are committed to continue to take an active role in creating a green and environmentally friendly campus environment. We hope that this success can be a motivation for the entire academic community to continue to contribute to realizing a greener and more sustainable campus,” said Prof. Dede.

FMIPA UI implements various strategies to realize sustainability in the campus environment, one of which is through the development of sustainable infrastructure. This effort is realized by developing smart classes that support the hybrid learning process, so that it can reduce paper use while increasing energy efficiency. In addition, the construction and maintenance of vertical gardens in several buildings are also carried out as a step to expand green space in the campus environment.

From the aspect of environmental and resource management, FMIPA UI implements an integrated waste management system to increase recycling rates and reduce waste. Campus greening efforts continue to be carried out by planting dozens of tree seedlings to improve air quality and expand green areas. In addition, plasticless and paperless programs are implemented to reduce the use of plastic and paper in various academic and administrative activities.

Meanwhile, in terms of energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction, FMIPA UI utilizes renewable energy and implements energy-saving systems in various campus facilities. Optimization of environmentally friendly transportation systems is also carried out to reduce carbon footprint.

Throughout 2024, FMIPA UI also continues to increase the number of innovative programs in the field of energy and climate change, both developed by lecturers and students. This effort also contributed to FMIPA UI winning the title at the 2025 UI GreenMetric Award.

UI Green Metric is an annual ranking held by the University of Indonesia (UI) to assess the commitment of universities worldwide to environmental sustainability. The assessment is based on three main indicators, Environment, Economic and Resource Efficiency, and Equity.

The assessment weighting includes various aspects, such as the condition of campus infrastructure, energy efficiency and climate change mitigation, waste management, water use, sustainable transportation, and implementation of education for sustainability.

With this achievement, FMIPA UI further strengthens its position as a pioneer in developing a green campus and proves its commitment to presenting sustainable innovation in the academic world. This achievement is also expected to be an inspiration for other faculties at UI and other universities in Indonesia to be more concerned about environmental sustainability.
