Launching a Book on Conservation, the Professor of FMIPA UI Presents Erik Solheim

A new book on conservation by Prof. Dr. Jatna Supriatna, Professor of Conservation Biology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, has been launched. This time, the book is entitled Biodiversity Conservation: Theory and Practice in Indonesia. The book is a continuation of his previous books, Conservation Biology and Preserving Indonesian Nature, Nature Tourism in National Parks, and Indonesian Primate Tourism.

Published by the Obor Indonesia Foundation, this book represents Jatna Supriatna’s attempt to address the increasingly challenging challenges of biodiversity and other natural resource conservation in Indonesia.

In his book, Jatna Supriatna states, “From one decade to the next, the exploitation of natural resources is increasingly perceived as disrupting the balance of ecosystems and biodiversity. Therefore, the conservation of living natural resources is becoming increasingly important and urgent. It is crucial to understand and properly implement conservation science that integrates natural, social, economic, and cultural sciences.”

It is undeniable that natural resources in Indonesia are increasingly being damaged, even though natural resources, especially living ones, are development assets that should be utilized for the common good of the Indonesian people.

Amanda Katili Niode (Head of the Expert Team of the Office of the Presidential Special Envoy for Climate Change Management) said that although the book’s narrative is presented with data, it is written in everyday language.

“So like a diary, this book is filled with personal stories and descriptions, so it flows and is not boring,” added Amanda. Meanwhile, according to Emil Salim, who was one of the keynote speakers, Jatna Supriatna also explained about environmental-based development solutions with architectural theory. landscape.

Architectural design landscape must pay attention to the natural conditions of the surrounding area, such as topography, vegetation and wildlife, climate, soil and water. “In chapter 8 of this book, architectural theory landscape discussed in depth as one of the solutions to environmental problems in Indonesia,” he added.

The book launch event also featured Erik Solheim, Executive Director. United Nation Environment Programme and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, to give a public lecture entitled Sustainable Development Goals: The Triple Bottom Line Pathway.

In the public lecture, Erik explained that sustainable development can be achieved through integration between social, economic and environmental dimensions.

The book launch and discussion event, as well as a public lecture, were organized by the Climate Change Research Center, the Institute for Sustainable and Earth Resources, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at the Pertamina Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia Campus. The event was opened by Dr. rer. Nat. Abdul Haris (Dean of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia), with an opening speech delivered by Prof. Emil Salim (Former Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia and Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia).
