One Map Policy for Sustainable Development in Indonesia

Tuesday (28/11/2017) the UI Department of Geography in collaboration with the Southeast Asian Geography Association (SEAGA) held the first SEAGA conference at UI in the UI Depok Hall area.

This year’s theme is “Geography for Global Understanding: Sustainable Changes in Environment, Society, and People”.

Present as one of the keynote speakers was the Deputy for Thematic Geospatial Information, Dr. Ir. Nurwadjedi, M.Sc, who discussed the national policy of “One Map.”

“We must realize that one of the biggest problems in Indonesia is land issues,” he said.

One of the causes of the emergence of land use conflicts is the lack of maps that have the same standards and format among agencies that have the authority to issue land use permits.

“It must be remembered that map data is often the basis for location permits for every activity for agencies/institutions at the central and regional levels,” he added.

For this reason, it is necessary to unify all map information produced by various agencies into one map in an integrative manner so that there are no differences or overlapping information.

This is where the “One Map” concept emerged, with the slogan “One Reference, One Standard, One Database, & One Geoportal.” In other words, the ultimate goal isto share datafrom a single source.

When this One Map Policy is realized, it will have many benefits, including resolving land use conflicts and resolving regional boundary conflicts.

However, according to Nurwadjedi, there are several obstacles faced by the government in realizing this one map concept, including human resources (HR) problems.

According to him, Indonesia currently faces a severe shortage of qualified and expert human resources in the geospatial field. This is where educational institutions like UI are needed.

He hopes that universities in Indonesia can establish vocational schools in the geospatial field that can produce ready-to-use personnel who are useful for the nation and state.
