“FMIPA UI students have once again achieved academic success. The FMIPA UI team consisting of I Wayan Reka Adi Saputra (Statistics 2017) and Akhmadi Zaini (Statistics 2017) won first place in the infographics category in the 2019 Enthusiastic Competition held by the State Islamic University in Yogyakarta on September 17-19, 2019.
“They managed to beat 11 other teams from various universities throughout Indonesia.
Referring to the big theme “Let’s Find the Treasure of the World with Data” with two categories offered, namely the data analysis competition (Statistics in Action) and the infographic competition (Infographic Competition), both chose the infographic competition category with a sub-theme related to personal data entitled “Data Pribadi Disalahgunakan, Dimanakah Hak Atas Privasi?”.
I Wayan Reka Adi Saputra, or Reka as he’s known, explained that big data is making new contributions to various industries these days. However, with its popularity, concerns have arisen about the security of the personal data that fuels big data.
According to him, the data entered by users into online applications, whether intentionally or not, has become a new commodity, now worth more than oil. The companies that own them use the term “free apps” or flashy features to obtain this data.
It was against the backdrop of the widespread misuse of personal data that he and his teammates took part in this competition.
“Because right now, the issue of personal data misuse is really hot. Even President Jokowi discussed the issue in his state address,” Reka said.
Meanwhile, the reason for choosing the infographic competition category, Reka continued, was to present information visually with an attractive display so that the material presented could be well understood by the general public.
In their infographic poster, Reka and Akhmadi Zaini outlined tips for avoiding personal data theft. For example, avoid displaying sensitive personal information on your profile, use multiple passwords, and monitor your security and privacy settings.
In addition, the public is also urged to increase vigilance against unknown emails, ensure the security of the network used, always pay attention to financial transactions, use the best security software, and activate two-step authentication.
Their achievements have also received appreciation from the entire FMIPA UI academic community. Dr. Tech. Djoko Triyono, Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs (WD Wilayah 1), who currently serves as Acting Dean of FMIPA UI, also expressed his pride.
“Of course, the leadership really appreciates it. Hopefully, it can be a motivation for his fellow students,” said Djoko.
Djoko also advised his two proud students not to become complacent but to develop their potential, including actively participating in various olympiads, both academic and non-academic. He assured them that he and his staff fully support their students in developing their potential.
“FMIPA UI strongly supports any student activities that build a positive image of the faculty,” he added.
“In line with the WD 1 FMIPA UI, I Wayan Reka Adi Saputra and Akhmadi Zaini, through their achievements, they hope that their fellow students will actively participate in various competitions or olympiads with enthusiasm and put aside the fear of losing.
