The UI Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Geophysics Student Team Won Third Place at the 2021 Brawijaya Geophysics Festival Seismic Interpretation

The 2019 Geophysics study program student team consisting of Zumrotul Aliyah, Stefanny Rizika Amina, and Arsandha Violetta Putri Santosa, successfully achieved 3rd place in the 2021 Brawijaya Geophysics Festival FMIPA Universitas Brawijaya Seismic Interpretation competition. The competition, which was held online, involved dozens of students from various campuses in Indonesia.

In general, the competition consists of three phases: registration, preliminary rounds, and the final round, which is followed by presentations. This was explained directly by one of the team members, Arshanda.

“For the scheme itself, at the beginning we registered as usual by collecting documents. In the preliminary stage, we worked on problems in the form of seismic interpretation by determining geological structures, stratigraphic areas, and potential hydrocarbon areas from the data and seismic cross sections provided. A few days later, we received news that our team had advanced to the final. The final round was quite challenging because we were only given approximately 3 hours to complete it. problem “Using borehole data and seismic cross-sections, we then presented the results to two judges for approximately 20 minutes, including a Q&A session. The winners were announced a few weeks later,” Arshanda explained, describing the series of competitions he had participated in.

The team’s interpretation of the work successfully attracted the attention of the judges with a strategy that focused on collaborating the given case from various points of view.

“My team and I tried to explore the basic theories we already know into a cohesive combination to present during the presentation. Actually, No There are specific reasons behind this innovation. However, we are confident that our innovation will be well-received, especially concern The given case can be viewed from various angles. Furthermore, our team attempts to examine the case from various geophysical perspectives, integrating it with other scientific disciplines. Therefore, we strive to ensure that the results are comprehensive. No “monotonous,” said Stefanny, another team member.

Zumrotul, the team leader, explained that his motivation for participating in the competition was to gain experience and directly apply the material he had learned in college. The team, named Interstellar, believed the competition would provide an opportunity to deepen their current field of study.

Interstellar also acknowledged that the competition they participated in was quite challenging, especially since it was their first experience competing in this category. However, with consistency and hard work, Interstellar proved they were capable of competing with the other participants.

“What’s certain is that I personally feel that my knowledge has been greatly enhanced, especially in the field of seismic interpretation. Actually, none of our team had ever taken a course in seismic interpretation. However, by participating in this competition, we felt compelled to learn more, both from the knowledge we had already acquired and from what we hadn’t. We learned more…-explore knowledge about geoscience to face this competition. From here, we have gained a lot of knowledge and experience that we have never had before, including public speaking and problem solving in various circumstances,” said Zumrotul at the end of the interview session.

Seismic Interpretation Competition is one of a series of competitions held by the Brawijaya Geophysics Festival (BGF) 2021. The competition tests participants’ basic knowledge, analytical skills, and interpretation of seismic data on common geophysical issues. timeline dari The competition, which was held online, started on September 18, 2021, and ended on October 9, 2021.
