FMIPA UI Student Team Designs Infographics to Increase Young Generation’s Interest in Investing

Two students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) from the Actuarial Science Study Program, namely Irene Devina Putri and Margareth Ravse Betari Atmojo Prabowo, won 2nd place in the ASiQ (Actuarial Science Quest) Infographic Competition organized by the Actuarial Science Student Association (HIMARIA) of Gadjah Mada University.

This was announced live online via Zoom Meeting at the event. awarding day on February 19, 2022. The competition, which was attended by more than 100 participants, carried the theme of the importance of investing and managing money well, namely, “Time Value of Money”.

Irene and Margareth are concerned about the large number of millennials who have minimal awareness of the importance of saving and investing to manage their financial resources and the lack of literacy among the younger generation about the concept of saving and investing correctly.

In fact, according to both of them, young age is the ideal age to start investing opportunities. Moreover, currently there are many financial instruments that offer investment.

became the background for the emergence of the idea to educate through visual communication.

Apart from minimal awareness and literacy, environmental factors which are external factors also influence a person’s investment awareness.

From this idea, Irene and Margareth began to collect and process valid and relevant data to then be visualized into attractive infographics according to the theme, so that it is easy for the public to understand.

In the infographic poster titled “The Value of Money Can Be Eaten Up by Time?” they emphasize important points about the importance of saving and investing for Gen Z. Starting from the Time Value of Money, why Time Value of Money can occur, the difference between saving and investing, to the Importance of Investing from now on.

“Our idea started from a term “Saving is the Key to Wealth”, but actually the advice is not relevant if it is done continuously in the long term. As time goes by, the value of money will decrease due to inflation. If the money we have is only saved in savings, the money can run out over time. Meanwhile, by investing, the value of money will increase and provide return yang tinggi di masa depan. Oleh karena itu, kami ingin memberikan edukasi bahwa penting untuk mengelola uang secara bijak melalui investasi sejak dini.” kata Margareth menjelaskan mengenai latar belakang gagasannya.

“In terms of uniqueness, the content we create is also… based on data and has answered the theme and objectives of this competition. We also package the information with unique infographics and designs,” added Irene.

The team admitted that it was not too difficult to complete the competition even without a coach or mentor. They worked on the division of tasks together, starting from choosing a topic according to the theme, collecting data, to compilingdesign infografisnya.

Talking about motivation, Irene said that her desire to join this competition was to utilize her semester break. In addition, she also felt motivated by the failure of similar competitions that she had participated in.

“As Actuarial students, we are also motivated to gain experience in actuarial science, especially the value of money and investment. Then, we also feel challenged to hone our skills in the field of design,” said Irene.

At the end of the interview session with the FMIPA UI Public Relations Team, Irene also talked about the benefits she got from the competition opportunity.

“By joining this competition, we learned many things. First, we learned more about the content of our infographics, namely the concept of the value of money and investment. Second, we also learned to compose and design infographics better because we have learned from previous competition experiences. Third, we can also learn to manage time and also maintain enthusiasm in the middle of the holidays to complete this infographic and give our best in this competition. Lastly, we learned how to work together with teammates to help each other, give each other criticism, suggestions, and encouragement,” said Irene.
