Two FMIPA UI students have successfully achieved a proud achievement in an international mathematics competition. This year, the achievement was achieved by Andry Wijaya (S1 Mathematics 2017) with a gold medal (First Prize), and Kelvin Tenata (S1 Actuarial 2018) with a silver medal (Second Prize) in the 2021 International Mathematics Competition (IMC) which took place virtually on August 2-7, 2021.
Both were selected as the contingent from Indonesia along with eight other best students after successfully winning the 2020 National Mathematics and Natural Sciences Competition (KN MIPA).
Before winning IMC 2021, Andry and Kelvin had already won various academic achievements in mathematics. Some of Andry’s achievements include winning the silver medal at KNMIPA 2020, 2nd place in the Sobat Bumi Competition 2020, and 3rd place in Mag-D ITB 2019.
Meanwhile, Kelvin made his achievements by winning the silver medal at ONMIPA 2019, the gold medal at KN MIPA 2020, 2nd place in LSM UNY XXVIII 2020, and most recently 1st place in LSM UNY XXIX 2021.
As a provision for this important event for young mathematicians around the world, the contingents were facilitated by Puspernas in terms of online pre-implementation coaching for IMC from July 21 to August 7, 2021. During the coaching, they were trained to work on various forms of international mathematics olympiad questions such as algebra, analysis, geometry and combinatorics. Not only that, the contingents were also trained to prepare mentally for competition. Coaching and mentoring of the contingents were carried out by lecturers from several universities in Indonesia.
Dr. Rokhmatuloh, M.Eng. as the Acting Dean of FMIPA UI to the FMIPA UI public relations team said, “We give our highest appreciation to the contingents from FMIPA UI, mentors, and assistants. Although this competition was held during a pandemic, making it impossible for the Indonesian contingents to go directly to Bulgaria, they remained enthusiastic and did not give up. Winning gold and silver medals at the same time is an extraordinary achievement from a long and mature preparation process. Not only representing the University but also as an offering for the Indonesian Independence Day.”
For your information, the International Mathematics Competition (IMC) is an international mathematics olympiad that is routinely held every year in Bulgaria. The 2021 IMC was held online with 591 participants from 54 countries participating. The questions worked on were related to algebra, analysis, geometry and combinatorics.
